X-240 Speaker buzzing/humming

I'm on my second set of X-240 speakers...

On the first set, one of the speakers stopped working unless I played with the mini-jack, and eventually all together within a few weeks.  I like Logitech, but I was very disapointed by the customer service to say the least.  It took me weeks of emailing and having my email bounced around the system before my warrenty was honored.  But nevermind!  Maybe in another post I'll go into it....

These speakers buuuuuzz!!!  Even at about 20% volume on the speaker-contorol I get a distinct buzzing/feeding/humming noice.  It doesn't particularly bother me when I'm plaing music, but when I want the sound louder it's annyoing because between soungs I can hear this brutal sound.  I try to combat this by turning the speakers as loud as possible (again only maybe 1/3 of the way up at best) on the control, and then maxing out the sound on my musicplayer/soundcard controls. Lame!

I also had a set of speakers once that made a similar noise when too close to my computer monitor... but these puppies hum and buzz in the middle of a room when there's nothing within several meters to cause a disturbance :smileysad:

I understand these are by no means amongst the top logitech speakers... but is there anything I can do to eliminate or cut down on this sound!?!

Thanks in advance.

Re: X-240 Speaker buzzing/humming

I have the exact same problem.  I just bought these new today and was real excited.  Unfortunately, as soon as I plugged them into the computer the speakers emit an annoying humming sound.  I plugged them into a 2nd computer and the exact same thing happens.  Frustrating.

Yeah - my fix was to take them back and get another pair of speakers for half the price with no buzzing whatsoever.

Re: X-240 Speaker buzzing/humming

I'm having the same trouble when I plug these speakers into my new Toshiba Satellite with Vista.  I don't think the buzzing was there when I first plugged them in.  And a few times the buzzing has gone away completely, but is still there MOST of the time.  There's a very faint buzz when the speakers aren't plugged into anything.  I can live with that, but the buzz when plugged into the laptop is noticeably louder and quite annoying.  I tried plugging them into my older Dell D600 with Win XP and there is no buzzing whatsoever.   I haven't tried plugging into anything else yet.

Re: X-240 Speaker buzzing/humming

I have/had the same buzzing/humming problem with my X-240s. Found it to be absolutely annoying and was actually causing me headaches since the humming levels were at such a low frequency. I've isolated my source as being the subwoofer, but your's can be something completely different.

There's too much movement on the underside of the sub (sorry, don't know the technical terms). You can test this by limiting the movement with your fingers. My solution was to actually shape bubble wrap into a circle and place it under the subwoofer cone (just don't obstruct the cone itself, just the surrounding rings). The bubblewrap minimized the movement with just enough give that the humming/buzzing has disappeared (Completely disappeared) . I did have to increase the bass volume on the subwoofer to compensate, but it works now. I definitely don't label myself as an audio guru so I don't know if this completely threw out the mechanics of the system, but it works for me. Shame consumers have to go through this for a system that obviously has some quality control issues. *I'm pointing my finger at you Logitech*

My speakers also buzz - it's so irritating that these people can't make a quality product. You'd think if they were in the business of making speakers, they'd get it right. LOGITECH, FIX IT!

Re: X-240 Speaker buzzing/humming

One  quick fix that may  help eliminate the buzzing is if there is anything that draws a lot of power ex: laptop wall adapter or perhaps your  computers power supply it can interfere with the speakers. I have the same problem with mine every time I plug in my laptop to charge it my speakers buzz.

Re: X-240 Speaker buzzing/humming

[ Edited ]

Like everyone else here, my speakers buzz too. However, ALL are producing the annoying sound, not just the sub. It sounds exactly like how electronic devices behave when improperly grounded. My speakers are nowhere near anything that causes EMI. As suggested on one audiophile site, I upgraded my soundcard from onboard to a Soundblaster Audigy series...no change (except in sound quality from the card).

It appears to be a manufacturing process defect, or poor quality control. Either way, this will likely be my last set of Logitech speakers, or anything else they make with speakers (had a set of their noise-cancelling headphones...defective as well).

VERY disappointing for a company that is one of the pioneers in the computer industry.
