Re: Logitech Alert Kills My Internet Connection

Sorry I'm late to this thread.

So, there was a thread earlier this year with similar symptoms: http://forums.logitech.com/t5/Alert-Security-Systems/HomePlug-takes-my-network-down/td-p/553830

There so far have been a few rare cases of HomePlug network adapters that run into a "router killer mode" issue.  We can get your HomePlug adapter replaced if you are running into this issue.  The best way is to contact support, and reference this thread.  We have worked with the HomePlug chipset provider to identify the root cause of the issue.

One way to isolate the problem is if you have multiple cameras in a system, temporarily use the power supply from one of the cameras in place of the network adapter, and leave the network adapter unplugged.  If the problem goes away, then you have a HomePlug network adapter that needs to be replaced.  FWIW, the indoor camera power supply is similar to the network adapter, except that it provides PoE power, and has some different internal identifiers.  You wouldn't typically want to run with an indoor camera power supply in place of your network adapter, but as long as you don't try to change the "Security Key", you can (temporarily at least) - the PoE is safe for non-PoE devices (it won't hurt your switch or router for example).

Re: Logitech Alert Kills My Internet Connection

Danielb I have an interesting issue that is not as bad as router killer but more like router screw with.

My issue, For months, I have been having terrible problems with my vpn connection to my work. I have worked from home for over 3 years and MOST of that has been without any issue at all. The problem I ran into came very shortly after I got my outdoor camera. here is the events of almost every single day for the last several months.

Start up vpn on my work laptop. Then remote into my workstation at work. Now, anywhere from 1 time to 20 times a day my vpn goes into what I call, oblivion. Nothing works, My remote connection times out, I can be talking on my phone which is voip and people will say I am breaking up, My home computer may take a long while to try and get to a web page on the internet. Now, once vpn is now in retry mode, you can forget it, it will not connect. I have to disconnect, disconnect the machine from the network, reconnect my machine to the network, restart vpn, log in and continue on.

I have discussed this was my internet provider, my vpn people at work and they have not been able to figure out what is wrong. Recently I been running tests and found that if I have alert commander not running, I have very few issues with the network problems. I am running on 30meg down from roadrunner using a docsis 3.0 modem which is also the router, one that I have not partiuclarly liked, but they have even replaced the modem 3 different times assuming that the problem might be in there. Does any of this coincide with the issues that homeplug has found for network interruptions? I really am at the point that I have got to come up with a solution for this issue as it is starting to affect me actually getting work done.

Re: Logitech Alert Kills My Internet Connection

It's possible that the HomePlug adapter could be involved.  If you have another camera you can temporarily spare, you could try the test to swap out the network adapter with a camera power supply temporarily.

A couple other things to try to be sure.

When you get into that bad state, unplug your HomePlug network adapter, wait 10 seconds, then plug it back in.  Does that change anything?

Then another experiement.  If you have a spare router (at least temporarily), plug the WAN port into your LAN, and the HomePlug network adapter into a LAN port on the new router.  You could try having one machine also on that same new LAN (that is not connecting via VPN), and then also try having no other computers on that LAN.  You could see if internet access behind that separate network runs into intermittent problems, while leaving the rest of your network just fine.

Re: Logitech Alert Kills My Internet Connection

I only have the one camera. However, I have unplugged the homeplug when that was happening and plugged it back up and everything ran fine for " a little while" and would repeat.

The issue with with a seperate router is that they dont alow bridging on my modem/router and putting a router behind it, nothing can get on the internet. I went through that when I first got it because I didnt want to use their dns but it wont let another router work behind it.

Re: Logitech Alert Kills My Internet Connection

Thanks for the update.  Given the other things you've tried, if unplugging the HomePlug network adapter then plugging it back in brought things back for a while, I think the next step for you is to contact customer support and get a HomePlug network adapter replacement (RMA your current one).

After you run with the new HomePlug adapter for a little while, let us know if your situation is solved!

Thanks,

-Daniel

[ Edited ]

I just have this issue and have an actual use case for investigation.

I have a master system with 3 internal cameras and 1 external camera.  Everything works fine for 2 weeks until I unplugged the Ethernet cable from the network adapter that connect to the router (to be specific, I unplug the Ethernet cable that attaches to the network adapter).  The network adapter is transferring data when I do it since I'm standing in front of one of the internal cameras and the LED light is flashing quite rapidly.  The home internet stops working when network adapter is plugged in and unplug it will fix the home internet issue.

Not sure if this is the main cause of the issue but at least I want to see if this help reproducing the issue.

Re: Logitech Alert Kills My Internet Connection

twmookitty - I'm not quite clear on your setup. How do you get internet to that location?  Is there something like a wireless cable modem?  And where are you plugging in the HomePlug network adapter?  Straight into the ethernet port of the computer?  If in fact you use wireless to get to the interent, and then plug the network adapter straight into the laptop, there are a couple of issues that you'll run into with that which I could detail more - one of which could be that your laptop sees a wired connection, and tries to use that to route to the internet.  If you do have something like a wireless cable modem, try plugging the HomePlug adapter into that "LAN" side of that cable modem.  If there's only one LAN port, and its already used by something, try buying a switch, plug the LAN side of the cable modem into that, and then the HomePlug network adapter and other network devices into the switch as well.

chanray - The symptom where your home internet stops working at some point, and then starts working when the HomePlug network adapter is unplugged from the router - that sounds like it could be the network adapter getting into "router killer mode".  Please contact customer support to get a replacement network adapter.

Re: Logitech Alert Kills My Internet Connection

[ Edited ]

Previous I always had Logitech Alert Commander running hidden in the background and I experienced a very unstable internet connection. Now I have tried to start Logitech Alert once a day to download recordings from the camera and when everything is finished I have exit Logitech Alert Commander and during this time my internet connection has been very stable. Not a single failure.

I will during the next few days make a new test and have Logitech Alert Commander continously running in the bakground again to see if this is what causes the unstable internet connection.

Re: Logitech Alert Kills My Internet Connection

Logitech,

I continue to experience this problem with my Logitech Alert system.  Running the software locked up the PC the software is running on, and also takes down my internet connection to all devices using the router for WiFi connectivity.  Since a replacement of the hardware seemed to have resolved the issue for this user, I was wondering if I could try the same with my hardware.  I've tried everything I know how to do .... even updated the software with the SP1 update recently released, but I'm unable to use this system as it's intended to be used.

Should I contact customer service to request a swap of the hardware?
