Re: Newb questions

One more question I can't seem to find a answer to.  What is the data rate of the streams from the camera so I can calcualte how much recording you get per GB?

Also, I assume it can be set to continuosly record and when the card fills up it will automatically write overthe oldest files?

Thanks again,
Scott

Re: Newb questions

30 seconds of video is roughly 5mb in a clip...a clip duration/size is limited by design...so 10 minutes of motion recording yields around 20 30 second clips...about 100mb total.

Yes, once the SD card fills-up, it will start overwriting the oldest clips.  You can always replace the SD with up to 32gb microSDHC...if you need more local buffering between times you get Alert Commander on the PC to copy them to disk.

I saw the tech document on the website.  IS there any CLASS (speed) requirements for the card?  Will a class 4 work?

Thanks,
Scott

Yes, a class 4 will work...but the price difference between 4/6/10 is not all that much anymore...so getting the best one you can is always advisable...for longevity if nothing else.  Logitech's jnoring swears by this one...

The total data rate is roughly 1.25 mbps.  Per gigabyte, you should get about ~115 minutes of video or so.  So, a 32 GB card holds roughly 60 hours of video.  With motion based recording, this is months of history in a typical installation.  Even in a very busy setting (for example, small business), I'd guess you get at least two or three weeks of history.

The cameras don't have a continuous recording setting, unfortunately--we only record when there's activity.  There is a sensitivity slider you can set to make the cameras record as much as possible though.

I know there's third party software out that can enable our cameras to do continuous recording (blue iris, I believe, has a continuous recording option) but our software is all motion-based.  I think the primary reason we're motion based is it's very hard to review the amount of footage continuous recordings creates, storage requirements balloon, it's very hard on the SD card, etc.

Is there some reason you want continuous?  (not questioning your choices, just curious why this is important to you as a user)

Re: Newb questions

Honestly hard rive space is cheap, and if it is recording ALL the time there is never a chance to miss something that doesn't missed by motion detection.
