Offsite video capture

I have just installed the 750i system at my second home and added the Web Commander software.  All seems to be working correctly, although as my wife points out I forgot to turn off the kitchen light!  However, it is not obvious to me how I might capture video taken after motion is detected remotely, i.e.. not only on the micro sd card which any semi-smart burglar is going to destroy.  Is there a way to do this using Web Commander?

Re: Offsite video capture

I've heard some people say they are using SugarSync or Dropbox on a PC they leave running in their house. These services upload folder contents to a cloud storage. Offsite. Drop dead easy. Pretty cheap too.

Re: Offsite video capture

We do not have an offsite recording availability but, you can certainly try 3rd party sites such as those mentioned below or you can download and install a software which is also 3rd party called Blue Iris and it will do the same operations. The only down side is that you have to have a computer running.

There are a few customer's who has found this software helpful and does operations that Our Alert Commander is not yet capable of.

While we are eagerly awaiting our 750e master system (it's been shipped from Newegg and currently on its way), I have set up a Windows Live account with Skydrive. This gives us 25GB upload space. Then I created a private photo album, shared only with my hubby. Any videos uploaded to that, will be played right from any browser.

To upload automatically, we have installed Gladinet virtual drive on the desktop computer. I have already downloaded the Commander software, and pointed it to the virtual drive (z:\Windows Sky Drive). At first it gave an error that it cannot write to the drive, but the second time it worked.

I have tested it with a dummy mp4 movie, and it works flawlessly. Can't wait till our camera system is here!

PS I realize another excellent solution would be Dropbox, but we'd rather use our accounts for syncing files between computer. As far as I know, Dropbox does not allow video playback from the browser, meaning we'd have to download the videos first.

One question: how big are the video files approximately? Skydrive supports files up to 100MB... would that suffice? Thanks!

Re: Offsite video capture

The video clips barely get over 5mb ( ~35-40 sec clips max ), so certainly no problem there.  You might want to test how long it takes to write, play, and even delete files there...that would be my concern...as the latency is likely kind of high, and your ISP upload speed would play into that as well...and don't forget the overall internet variability <g>

Thanks for the reply :smileyhappy:

I'll let you know how fast it uploads... our Internet speed is extremely slow anyway (2mbps download or so, no idea what upload is, probably less than 1), so that is not really my concern. It's more the idea that if are away, and we get an email that the camera was triggered, at least 10 minutes later (in case of a 5 MB movie) or so we might be able to see what it was :smileyhappy:

For now it's all theory, because we have nothing to test it with yet :smileyvery-happy:

Go to http://www.speedtest.net/ to test your download and upload speed.

The one you would be concerned with is the upload speed where the cameras are. We like to see at least 1mbps upload.

Download: 2.66

Upload: 0.77

Don't expect it to improve much, after all this IS rural BC :smileyhappy: Not wanting to change the subject too much, but I assume that when we view the cams from within our LAN, the speed will be better?

My husband is thinking of investing in a PoE switch, so he can get it all on the UPS (I know, this really gets off topic) :smileyvery-happy:

If it is through the Commander program the upload speed does not matter.

Through the website though the camera still has to go to our website through your internet then you access our site through your internet, so it is usually the same no matter if you are at home or somewhere else.

It is all related to the powerline preformance and the wiring in the walls.

Our cameras do support PoE and will give you a more reliable connection with Commander.

Re: Offsite video capture

PoE & UPS is a very good choice...that is my setup.  And yes, local viewing will be better via Alert Commander on the PC for live stream, but since your clip storage is outside your local network, then that won't be as quick.
