Driving Force GT problems

I've posted this on a GT5 forum, but I'll paste it below.  This DFGT problem is really bugging me, and I wonder if I don't have a defective wheel.

I've been playing GT5 happily for a few days now using the Dual Shock 3 with no major problems, except my mediocre thumbstick steering. I decided to improve my experience by getting a Driving Force GT... big mistake so far.

I've tried every setting possible--steering style, power assist, force feedback, TCS, assists ON/OFF, but these problems persist:

1) The wheel won't stop randomly fighting me (even on straightaways).
2) The force feedback pushes me to overcorrect after nearly every corner.
3) It spins out on all accels & decels... no matter the car.
4) Force feedback seems mis-timed to my actions, I steer, then it resists, I stop steering, it keeps resisting.

Obviously a lot of these problems are related, and I feel like some magical setting will fix it. I went all the way down to a 67hp car and managed to drive OK. Went up to a 160hp car and it's force feedback skid-city. I even tried driving the same car with my dual shock and couldn't make it skid... AT ALL.

I'll end by saying I'm a long-time driver and have even done a little time trial driving with my previous car (2004 WRX). I know this is a "game" and not "real driving"... but c'mon, there should be some level of correlation here. I'd love to use this wheel, but it is just horrible and, without some help, I'm going to have to return the thing.

Thanks for any help!

Re: Driving Force GT problems

I've got the same problem, and haven't found a way to adjust the force feedback strength. Even minor corrections on the straight kicks in the FF, taking corners equals almost ripping the wheel of to get a reaction and each time I counter steer I'm afraid I'll break the whole mechanism with how hard I have to steer.

Went back to my controller and sending the wheel back if there's no response here.

Re: Driving Force GT problems

First of all, one of the things you can do to test the wheel on a PC. Plug it into a computer and install Logitech Gaming Software 5.10. After you've done that, go to the windows Game Controllers control panel, and you can test the rotation in there to make sure the system is responing in time (note: In that window, the in-window representation of the wheel only turns 180, even if you have the rotation set to 900. Thus, at the default settings, you'll be rotating the wheel faster in person than it will on screen, but that's normal). You can also press face buttons on the wheel to simulate feedback effects.

To change feedback effects and to disable/enable power steering, restart the game. Then, before going into GT mode, go to the icon at the bottom that's 2nd from the right. Click on that to get to settings. Press down twice on the D-Pad to go to the wheel hardware config, and the first option can be used to alter feedback effects. Don't worry about the steering type-that's not used on the current wheels. I'd just alter the feedback strength and try chaging the power steering setting.

wswingly- It sounds like you're having the same cognitive disconnect I had with my first 48 hours of wheel usage. A lot of what you're describing is how the game reacts when you exceed the performance of the tires in relaiton to the current conditions, AND in a video game, you don't have the same fear of impending death to keep you within the limits of the machine for the conditions. Try the above steps, and then maybe take the EK civic or DC2 integra around the track a couple times at a completely moderate speed. After you get the lines down, start shaving the seconds off while keeping a primary focus on maintianing the lines. I have to force myself when playing GT5 to keep an eye on the speed as I often don't get a strong sense of speed while playing.

Re: Driving Force GT problems

I did as you said and installed the soft and tested the wheel on my pc. Turning was exactly the same as indicated, turning 180 and then blocking. Testing the feedback it just ripped it out of my hands lol.

Headed back in GT5, in the hardware config set to amateur/power steering on/feedback minimum. Then got the civic and went on track. If I stay below 10 kph the wheel reacts fine. Going 50 kph turning is already a chore, anything above that is a work-out.

Not sure if thee's anything else I can change...

Re: Driving Force GT problems

When you are using the wheel, it does take more force and concentration than a joystick, but allows you more accurate control. The license tests and NASCAR runs are MUCH easier on a wheel.

If you guys could put up a youtube video we could probably analyze what's going on better. The only reason I'm thinking it's a style-related thing was once I was helping with a tradeshow and I had someone complain that the wheel was broken over the same types of complaints (Was on GTR2 on PC though). I was able to pull a perfect lap first time, then shave a second off each succeding lap. I also was then able to give him an impromptu drivng lesson and then he was then able to handle the wheel.

so yeah, put up a youtube on say a A-spec time trial, driving lines on, with both the wheel and the bottom half of the screen visible, and the view set to bumper-cam level (no car is visible, two rotary dials for RPM/speed, gas/brake indicators visible).

Re: Driving Force GT problems

Hi Charles, I got my DFGT several weeks ago and I use it on my ps2 with GT4. But it seems that I can not turn off the automatic feedback even I have tried to turn off all the settings in the game(The settings names indicate that they are only apply to the GT FORCE and GT FORCE PRO, May it not effective with new DFGT?).

There are also other problems same with wswingley:

1) The wheel won't stop randomly fighting me (even on straightaways).
2) The force feedback pushes me to overcorrect after nearly every corner.
3) It spins out on all accels & decels... no matter the car.
4) Force feedback seems mis-timed to my actions, I steer, then it resists, I stop steering, it keeps resisting.

Could you give me some guidance about setting the DFGT properly to play GT4 on PS2?

Thank you for your help!!

Re: Driving Force GT problems

I'm betting that it's what CharlesB was talking about. It took me a few days to get used to the wheel too. My DFGT has been running great for over 2 years now. I'm surprised to see so many issues.

My advice for the settings is,

Driving mode- Professional

FF strength- 7

Power assist- OFF

Then the in-game car settings,

TCS- 3-5 depending on car / tires

ASM- OFF

ABS- 1

I've been using the wheel with these settings with great success. I've even had friends come by that have never used a wheel, and they were able to pick it up within 5-10 laps of playing. My guess is the 'fighting you back' feeling you are getting is the power assist steering.

As far as spinning out whenever you accel/decel, are you just mashing the pedals and whipping the wheel, or are you being smooth? If you aren't being smooth, and your suspension isn't setup to accommodate that style of driving, you will always spin out.

Re: Driving Force GT problems

Hi,

I got he driving force gt and and had the same problem but im playing need for speed hot pursuit.

After doing alot of unusefull adjustments i pulled out the electricity and the wheel was free!! I could use it normally now.

On the other hand i think its wrong doing that because in all youtube vids the button in the middle is turned on which indicates power...

So plz someone tell me is it wrong
