G13 EQ2 LCD -- DPS always showing zero "0", all else works fine.

I have a G13. I am playing everquest 2 (EQ2). I have the latest version of the Logitech gaming software. I am using the Everquest II applet included with the logitech gaming software. The applet works fine, but damage per second (DPS) always shows as zero during/after a fight. The DPS never shows a number other than zero.

What do I need to do to get the DPS to show on the LCD using the applet provided with the logitech gaming software?

Thank you.

I don't think that applet is part of the Logitech software.  I think it's actually part of the EQ2 game itself, similarly to how the WoW applet is built into that game and the Ventrilo applet is built into the Ventrilo software.

So if it's not working, you need to talk to the EQ2 developers about it.

The folks at EQ2 tech support tell me it is not created by Sony Online Entertainment (SOE).

Is anybody else using the Everquest II applet and able to get the DPS to register properly?

Logitech Support: “Have you tried the G13 game board with any other applications aside from Everquest 2?”

Me: “Yes.”

Logitech Support: “Are the other applications also showing ‘damage per second’ as zero?”

Me: “Photoshop does not utilize ‘damage per second’.”

Logitech Support: “So this error does not display in other applications?”

Seriously, Logitech? Is there anyone there I can call to ask about my video game hardware who has played a video game?

I think EQ2 tech support is misinformed, of they misunderstood what you're asking.

EQ2 has had LCD support for a long time (at least since the G15 and G19 were current):

http://www.logitech.com/en-us/68/554

I am absolutely certain that when the G15 was a current product, the EQ2 applet was not part of the Logitech software.  If EQ2 is able to show anything at all on the LCD (and showing "0" means that it is) that means the Logitech software is working.  If EQ2 is showing the wrong thing, that's a problem with EQ2.

But I would not be surprised if the EQ2 developers refuse to fix this problem.  Indeed, I wouldn't be surprised if they refuse to even acknowledge the problem.

Re: G13 EQ2 LCD -- DPS always showing zero "0", all else works fine.

As you've discovered, not everyone at Logitech tech support is among the smartest, either.  In this case, I don't think there's any value in pursuing things with Logitech anyway, since it's really not their problem (even if their tech support is very slow to realize this).

The way the LCD works is this: games define a bitmap containing the image they want the LCD to display.  they then send this bitmap to the Logitech LCD device via the Logitech LCD SDK.  if you can see this bitmap on your LCD, that means the Logitech software is functioning correctly, because its only responsibility is to accurately display whatever bitmap it is given.

The responsibility for ensuring that the information contained in that bitmap is correct lies with the program that's creating the bitmap.  There are some Logitech applets that are responsible for bitmap creation: clock, performance monitor, RSS reader, etc.  But for games, the Logitech software doesn't create these bitmaps, the games themselves do.

The one exception is games that provide LCD support via third-party plugins, or third-party programs.  But as far as I know, EQ2 isn't one of these cases (Wikipedia lists EQ2 as having "native" LCD support, meaning it's built into the game and doesn't require a separate addon).

Ken,

Thank you so much for your thorough explanation of the "game to LCD" process. It is very helpful.

I only tried the online chat with the EQ2 folks. I'll try giving them a call next.

Thank you, again! :smileyhappy:

timothy655321, you wouldn't happen to have a case number from your contact? If you do, PM me, I'd like to pursue and fix what happened there... I can't do anything about Sony's support erroniously telling you they didn't make the applet, but I certainly can find out why it didn't get handled properly on our side.

If the applet uses the combat log to figure out your DPS, you may have to make sure the combat log is turned on.  It's been several years since I played EQ2, but when I did play, the combatlog was off by default.
