Re: G5 mouse freeze

[ Edited ]

I'm having the same problem... Are there any Logitech reps that read these forums?  Can anyone shed some light on the problem with the G5 mouse and Windows 7?

I don't want to have to spend $70 on a new mouse if I don't have to... especially when this mouse is only a few years old and should be working perfectly.

One more bit of info... when my mouse freezes, occasionally the DPI settings are corrupted at the same time.  The led indicator on my mouse will have the middle (default) light lit up, but the cursor on my screen will act as though I have the mouse set to an extremely low DPI setting.

I'm having the same exact problem with my G5 as TheKyle. Intermittent cut-outs, with the severe reduction in speed. I can force it to a regular speed by increasing it to the max, but on the medium setting it's sloooooow. And naturally, it's less than a month out of warranty (2008 X-mas gift).

Re: G5 mouse freeze

I contacted Logitech support, and they told me that my mouse is definitely defective and that they'll gladly replace it as long as it's still under warranty... so that's cool.

The problem is that my mouse is about 5 months out of warranty.  :smileysad:

Re: G5 mouse freeze

Sorry to tell you this but I had the same problem with my G5 & G500, it's the cord that is making it shut of, the contact is loose so when you move it sometimes your mouse will lose contact with the computer, that's why it's disconnecting... Only fix is to send it back to logitech if you're under warranty, other option is to open the mouse up and fix the cabeling.

Yup, I've already ordered and received a new mouse... whenever I have a chance, I'll be opening up my old G5 to see if I can fix the bad wiring.

I'm glad I didn't buy the G500. Sounds like Logitech has some serious problems to fix with the quality of their mouse cables.  :smileysad:

Re: G5 mouse freeze

yea, the laser mice have really bad wiring, not the optical tho. Like a mx518 can work for 5years. I think its a problem with the cloth cable.

Re: G5 mouse freeze

I am having this issue also. I do not think it is the cord or my mouse I will explain. I have had my mouse for years and just began having this issue. I have tried many things to no avail. I began to think it was my mouse. So I tried it out on my Fiancé's Mac and it cut on fine and stayed on. I am assuming it is something with Windows.

I had wiped my drive to see if that worked and it seemed to stop again after I downloaded SP1 for Windows Home Premium64Bit. Now if it is related or just a coincident I can't say.

Re: G5 mouse freeze

I stopped using this mouse well over a year ago and recently started to use it again on a new machine because it is the only spare mouse I have on hand.  New computer, different operating system, same problem.  The mouse stops responding and after about 5 seconds the sound of a new device being plugged in comes through my speakers and the mouse begins to work again.  I would have thrown this thing away a long time ago had I not payed what I did for it.

I suppose that the issue could be a loose wire, but the frequency of mouse interrupts absolutely goes up when CPU usage is increased.  While browsing the web and listening to music, I rarely experience a mouse failure, but when running Office, Power Point, Excell and several large PDF'sall at the same time, the mouse hangs occur often and almost always when copy/pasting large amounts of information from one source to another.

I also experience failures while playing games, always at the worst possible time it seems.

I contacted Logitech customer support about it and was told that a replacement could be sent, but that they were currently out of stock and to call back in two weeks.  Two weeks later and they were still out of stock.  I played that reoccurring game for almost 3 months before giving up  and boxing the mouse.

Kinda interesting that people are still having problems with this damned thing!

Re: G5 mouse freeze

Signed up just to chime in on this post. Thanks to all who have posted in this thread, I had serious computer problems and this thread made me switch my mouse, which fixed everything!

On a new computer build with Win7 64bit I was constantly dropping my display driver and my G5 driver. Then having BSOD anywhere from 1-5 times a week. BSOD error codes didn't point me at the mouse and since my display driver was always dropping, I though it was the video card. I simply dealt with it until I lost an entire project from BSOD and then decided to researched everything plugged into my computer (many things). So when it came time to research my G5 this thread came up. I immediately replaced the mouse and haven't had a hiccup with my OS in 2 weeks... I made sure to wait before I posted here.

I bought 3 G5s years ago and will now sell them on Ebay. I'd actually keep one of them if I had a driver for my Mac rig... no love on that from this company either.  So I'm very disappointed about this investment and will never come back to Logitech for a mouse. I can only thank Logitech for helping me discover the RAT7 mouse, it has changed my computer lifestyle... amazing, I can't believe how awesome that mouse is.

With that said I'm still on my Logitech 510 keyboard and am loving it. But at this point, if one thing goes wrong I'm dropping the namebrand for good... The underdog companies really have competitive products.

I can't gauruntee the G5 was causing all of this chaos, but apon replacing my G5 I've gone from serious, unstable computer problems to absolutely no problems at all for 2 weeks... If these problems come back, I will most certainly retract and correct my statements.

Good bye... thank god you're out of my life... wish I had my $100s of dollars back.

Re: G5 mouse freeze

Hi Guys,

Maybe some good news on the G5 front :smileyhappy:

Bought my first laptop in 6 years, preinstalled with Windows 7 Pro 64bit, grabbed my trusty old G5 and plugged it in... you guessed it, detected it and and then it lost power. Where my issue seems to have been a bit different was that when it lost power, it stayed that way until I unplugged it and plugged it back in. Even disconnecting and reconnecting didn't seem a sure way to get it going again.

So I disconnected the mouse, went to Logitech, downloaded the Logitech Setpoint 6.32 W7 64bit software, installed the software, waited for it to finish and reconnected the mouse. Exact same issue. I was getting ready to part ways with my dearly beloved G5... Fiddled with the power settings (set them to high performance where they remain at the moment), tried all of the 'common fixes', no luck.

Anyway, I knew my partner's G500 hadn't had any issues with her laptop running W7 so I grabbed that and plugged it in. Upon plugging it in, Windows detected the new hardware and begin installing drivers... interesting. So out of curiosity I plugged the G5 back in and it has worked perfectly ever since.

Good luck.
