G-series Gaming Mice

I've just bought a G500, not for gaming but for photographic work in Photoshop. The setpoint software will not install. Install fails with error 501. I am running XP Pro SP3. I've looked through the support messages and tried installing on a clean boot as suggested, but no change. One message specifically mentioned disabling Threatfire but that had no affect. I've downloaded previous versions back to v6 but none of them install either. This looks to be a fantastic piece of hardware but let down by insufficiently tested software. If I can't get this fixed soon it'll have to go back for a full refund as I can't afford to spend the time to find out why it won't install. I hope someone on here can come up with some useful ideas. What’s the exact (verbatim) error message displayed? You may want to take a look at the event viewer to see if you can determine the cause or contact Logitech Customer Care for your region directly so the error logs can be attached to a case.
