Hi, jk220.
I've bought a g500 recently and had the same problems as you described. After suffering a day playing with configs of g500 i gave up and brought it back to the shop. I'm still using MX500 and happy with it.
After browsing internet i've found a page:
http://forums.overclockers.ru/viewtopic.php?p=7124
As for my guess, i think the build quality of g500 varies and Logitech should take a notice.
The page is in russian, so here is adapted google translation:
Today, once again dismantled the device (for the second time), took off all that you can even scroll wheel with all the "vaunted" mechanism Microgear (or whatever it ..). Waving mouse from side to side - something loose, even if the finger hold mikriki (by the way they manufacture Omron). After a couple of hours of torment, the culprit was found - it was very lens!
Lens dangling from side to side with a fairly decent play. Completely pulled out a fee at the bottom of the base I saw a mouse oval (one inside the other) paths, and on the surface of the base lens-oval lugs, respectively. Long puzzled as to make a little squeeze lens? It was decided to resort to good old duct tape. Cut strips of about 1.5 mm in width and 4-5 mm in length. These strips glued into grooves on the basis of the mouse. Ultimately, the assembly of the assembly lens tucked stopped to rattle. It seems that the result is achieved.
