G-series Gaming Mice

I've switched back to my Mamba for now.  I still have the G700, and hope there will be some resolution in the near future, because I do like this mouse.  I just can't make small precise movements in wireless, and can't use it wired with that flagpole of a wire (i'm exaggerating a bit, but it really is extremely stiff compared to the G5 wire or the Mamba's wire) for an extended period of time.  So for now I can't justify using it over my Mamba or even my G5 prior to that.

Charles, any more info from your end?  Were you guys able to replicate this behavior that we are observing?  If so, Will it need a hardware fix or can it be fixed through a driver update?

So, thankfully the guys I'm working with on this one are in Europe, so they basically "worked through the night"

Long story short:

No software quickfix at this moment, but we have engineers who have been tasked with hammering on this.

So, anyone experiencing this issue, let's try something:

Restore the Productivity and Gaming profiles to Default on the G700. Set the G700's Gaming profile Battery to Max Gaming. Apply to save your changes

Test the following conditions. Repeat the steps once with the Productivity and once with the Gaming, and report if you'd like to help

• Pause the mouse for a full 5 seconds. Move slowly, then pause and repeat a couple times. Let us know what happens.
• Pause the mouse for only 1 second. Move slowly, then pause and repeat a couple more times

With the Gaming profile enabled:

• Move the mouse slowly and constantly in a circle and see if there are any unexplained path changes. Line correction should be off. Normal hand jitters should be ignored.
• Move the mouse slowly in a straight line
• Move the mouse slowly in a straight line, but alternate the speed.

What I'm looking for is to determine if there are artefacts occurring in the wireless signal, or if the primary issue is a pause in movement after a short rest.

Hi Charles, just went through your tests and have the results for you:

1) 5 second pause.  Productivity and Gaming both acted the same, small movements would not result in cursor movement sometimes, got the same "i'm breaking through a barrier" feeling that everyone described.

2) 1 second pause, same result.

Tests on the Gaming Profile:

1) Circle test.  When moving in a small circle slowly (slow enough that the problem presents itself), cursor would sometimes continue in a line; and angle snapping was off.  Let say I started drawing upward on the left side of the circle, when I went to turn into drawing to the right, it would continue drawing upward for a bit more even though I was definitely going diagonally or right.  Eventually it would start going right, and then when I turn to go downward, same thing.

2)  Straight line is the basic test I've been using.  The movement problem exists here.

3)  Alternating speeds results in, works fine, doesn't move correctly (once you're going slow enough), works fine, etc.

I've been noticing the same issue with my G700 mouse and I just tried out the various tests you outlined, Charles.  Here are my findings:

1. If I let the mouse rest for 5 seconds, and then make extremely small incremental movements, it takes a while before the cursor finally registers a move.  It then operates acceptably but the cursor does stop moving sporadically. 

2. If I let the mouse rest for 1 second, movement registers from the get-go but there are still the sporadic moments of movement not being registered. 

I noticed this behavior in both productivity and gaming profiles.  I did the same tests with my other wireless mice (MX Revolution and Performance Mouse MX) and did not notice this issue.  Also, to provide some additional details, the kind of small movements I was making was along the lines of moving the cursor pixel by pixel.  When I tried these tests with a wired connection, the G700 had no issues. 

The circular tests didn't seem to pose any issues.  However, the straight line tests did pose an issue and were noticeable especially when moving the cursor over pixel by pixel.

Kind of a weird way to show the issue, but I did some drawing tests in photoshop and I think they show the problem pretty well.

The 2 big squiggles on the left were in wired mode. At the top, you can see how they are pretty consistent with the shape even when doing smaller circular movements. The 2 on the right are wireless. You can see how when the squiggles start off small they were very hard to get a consistent shape. As it got bigger it the mouse was easier to control and the shape become more like what I would expect from my hand movements.

There is also two smaller squiggles on the bottom. The one on the left is how I expected the shape to come out and it was using wired mode. The one of the right was wireless.

My tests that Charles suggested were consistent with Undread's results...

In my experience the cursor on the desktop seems to chug along a little bit in both wired and wireless mode.  It's more pronounced in Wireless mode though.  I don't notice the problem at all while I'm gaming though.  Guess I'm just moving around to fast to notice it there.  

I have the same dpi and polling settings for all my profiles so that's not an issue.  Battery is set to max all the time.

I'll chime in with the latest news (Sorry, at PAX so I've been very busy).

Long story short: We've got it resolved, and we'll be releasing a software update when we can. We'll also be fixing the pause/break assignment bug. We've got to test it thuroughly, but I'll post when it's ready for download.
