I almost just finished building my new system, and installing Vista Ultimate x64, everything seams to work, except when moving the mouse.
So i have noticed that whenever i move the mouse, the cpu usage goes up to a maximum of 50%. About 40% being used by some file called csrss.exe the rest seams to belong to other processes. Normal idle usage with no apps open is around 0%-2%.
I tried using other mouses, including a PS2 to make sure the problem wasn't with my USB. I even tried an old USB to PS2 adaptor for my G5, but this showed no noticeable difference. Using another USB mouse limits the CPU usage to around 15-30%, which is still to high.
Finally i tested my G5 again while having IE7 (64 bit) open, and instead of having most the CPU used up by csrss.exe its now used by iexplore.exe, about 30-35% still belongs to csrss.exe while iexplore.exe takes up around 40-47%.
The issue only occurs whenever i move the mouse. Having IE7 open while testing would take up around 77%-82% CPU while moving the mouse.
I also tried to disable AMD's Cool'n'Quiet in the bios, but this did not seam to effect the issue.
I also noticed, that when i enable those wired mouse trails on the pointer, the cpu usage goes down to around 25%-30%, but obviously i don't want to enable trails on my mouse. Also some has reported that closing SetPoint solves the problem, or using an older version, this have no effect in my case, it even had the problem with the default windows drivers.
My problem seams similar to what people have reported, high CPU usage when moving the mouse whatever game/program is open takes up the most CPU.
MB> K9N SLI V2
CPU> AMD Athlon X2 Processor
Vista is fully updated, only leaving optional language packs and some Extras.

I just tried to reinstall Vista, even though it was a fresh install to begin with, and that did nothing. But atleast i managed to install the chipset drivers this time.
My grapichs card is Asus EAH3850 X2 1GB i suspect either the MB or that of being the source.
Searching on google shows quite a few people with the same problem, on different OS versions. I find this to be quite some waste of CPU, it should only take about 1%-4% at most.
Here are some issues which seams to be related, and all seams to be unresolved.

I Finally got around testing in Windows XP Pro, to see if the problem occurred there as well, it didn't! I also managed to find out, that its unrelated to logitech's drivers and mouse. The problem also occurs with other mices as well!
This appears to be a problem with all versions of Vista, I've tested both in Ultimate X64, and finally in Vista Buisness x32, with the same results. Moving the Mouse still eats my CPU, regardless of whether i use the 64bit version of Vista, or the 32bit version.

Vista does silly things with processes, and sometimes low-level activities, if nothing else is active, will chew up CPU cycles like mad. Unfortunately, that's just a nature of the system, and there's not much we can do.
FYI though: The G5 will use more cycles than a traditional mouse, because it's report rate is @ 500/sec (most mice are around 125/sec). That's 4 times the data being sent across USB, and USB uses CPU to calculate it's data (unlike Firewire, for example). The improved data bandwidth resolution leads to a better performance that on anything greater than 1Ghz far outweighs the hit on the CPU.
The more you know (I need that silly ABC logo here)

I've been using vista x64 since SP1 came out and nothing of that sort ever happend to me, I always keep a close watch on my CPU usage via the G15v2 monitor.
As for the mouse CPU usage, I have a G9 with 1000 as the report rate setting and i dont see much of a CPU usage increase when moving the mouse around.. probablly just about 2-4% tops.

I know that higher polling rate results in higher CPU usage but shouldn't the amount of data be pretty much the same, only that it's cut in smaller pieces?
Or does the mouse always send some "useless" data together with the position changes and "button pressed info"?

Hallo everyone, sorry that i didn't report back before.. I have tried to logon, but i had forgotten which email i used to sign up.. My blog is getting quite a few hits on this topic, which reminded me of this thread.
I do not think this is a logitech issue, I've tried other mouses, and with the same result.
The status is this.. I've tried installing 32bit XP, with the same result, so now i know it wasn't related to vista, or 64bit. I'm now using Windows 7 x64bit, still with the same result. Moving the mouse eats CPU. But it doesn't appear to effect performance, which is a good thing. I can't say for sure though, because i haven't ran any benchmark tests.
I'm still on the same hardware.
