Now that there's the new Wii mote and sixaxis, why not innovate a little more?
First of all, I wonder where's the left handed gamepads? Where the face buttons are on the left side. Exactly like the normal pad but mirrored. Nobody seems to make these, I'm sure they would sell. 8 - 15% (wikipedia) adults are lefties and it's even more common among men.
Then there's this idea of a gamepad with a trackball. Replace the right stick with a trackball, could be good for FPS and RTS game types. Hard to say tought, without trying.
And what's up with the face buttons? This idea originates from the 80's and the NES. These days both sticks are used together to control games and flinging a thumb at the buttons distracts this. The sticks should be at the "face" and all the buttons on the bumber. Thisway they could be operated without distracting stick controls. And thiskind of design could more easily be symmetrical and serve both, left and right handed gamers.
