Harmony 880 Remote just stopped working!

I had a harmony 880 remote for about 2 years and then one day it just stopped working. I did not do a firmware upgrade or change the config or anything. I read some thread about IR transimtters going out and i checked the remote through the camera view and it seems the IR receivers were okay. I called Logitech and they said i was out of warranty and that i could not return it.

I then bough another used haromny 880 remote. It worked for about 2 weeks and then the same thing happened. The remote just stopped working for no reason. Does anyone have any ideas on what i could check or what might be wrong? Once again i did check the remote through a digital camera and the white lights are coming but they are faint.

They should be bright, did you try moving closer to your devices and see if that works?

I've also had my Harmony 880 for a number of years, and last week, it just stopped working.  Everything on the menus looks the same as it did before.  I connected it to my computer, upgraded the firmware (I think), and added additional commands, but still nothing happens when I try to control any device.  I added additional devices to wife's Harmony 1000 in order to control my components, and it works just fine.

Something has obviously gone bad on my Harmony 880, but I am not getting any error messages whatsoever indicating what the problem might be.  I suppose that the IR Transmitter has gone out, and I will try to find the post that you referred to about 'checking through the camera view' in order to see what that is all about.

It seems as if the email support service is down until September 21, and trying to call Logitech about this problem is a complete joke.  I am not going to pay someone just for providing me with the opportunity to ask them if they can fix my remote for a reasonable price.  I wonder if it is even worth fixing this remote, or if it would be better to just buy one through Amazon for about $119?

First I would try the digital camera test to see if the IR emitters are firing, if they are you will see 2 flashes in the camera view finder LCD display, second you can get to Logitech email support by clicking Support lint in the Tip Center in the Software, that support is not down.  Logitech does not repair remotes.

"Logitech does not repair remotes."

I went home and tried to see if I could see the IR emitters firing through use of the LCD viewfinder on my digital camera.  I couldn't see any 'flashes' at all.  I then selected the DirecTV HR20 700 from the Device Menu, and I could actually power this unit ON/OFF, but only if I held the Harmony 880 about 2 inches away from the sensor on the unit.  So the Harmony 880 is still working in a sense, but not properly or as intended.

Since Logitech does not seem to be willing or able to repair the remotes that they sell, I suppose that my only option is to buy a new one?  Is it possible that these remotes cannot be repaired?  Although it is several years old, mine actually looks brand new, and its a shame that it has to be trashed because one component, albeit a very important component, seems to have failed.

Ok, thanks for that VERY helpful link.  Since I last posted, I have done the following:

1.  I called Logitech and explained the problem and the steps that I have gone through in order to determine its cause.

The representative that I spoke with confirmed my Harmony Account when I provided him with my login ID.

2.  I have received an email with a reference number that will allow me to validate the 50% discount that I will get on

any Harmony Remote from Logitech's Web Store.  I am planning to purchase the Harmony One.

3.  I have printed out the tutorial in the link that you provided, and I fully intend to see if I can fix my Harmony 880 by

following the instructions contained therein.  I have already managed to take it apart.  Now I have to buy the LEDs,

a soldering kit, a tiny set of pliers, and some nerves of steel.

Thanks for your help.

Hi,

I doubt that they will disable the old remote when you purchase a new one, even with their discount. Maby someone from Logitech will comment this.
