Harmony Remotes - Hardware

The batteries to my 550 died a few days ago for the first time, I replaced them and when I tried to power it back up it does nothing. I tried to plug it into the USB and see what was up, but it comes up and says Replace the Batteries. I can still changed and add new devices/activities while connected to USB, but the remote doesn't work outside of that. I tried using another 4 batteries incase those were somehow bad (even though it was a brand new box) it still didn't come on. I bought another brand of batteries just to be double sure, still nothing.

Any ideas? I love this remote and just got a new surround sound system, so I'm up to 4 remotes now, really need to get it working again.

Might sound stupid but ... Got BOTH batteries in the right direction?
