Harmony Remotes - Hardware

I bought a 720 and when I attach it to my Macbook Air's USB port at the appropriate stage of the setup process, it proceeds through a self test and displays a blue screen with the Harmony 720 logo, but it seems unresponsive as the setup does not proceed. 

The way I see it, either the remote or the software is defective.  Does anyone know anything about this?
