Harmony 1000 stops working, needs reboot

[ Edited ]
I have been using 2 Harmony 1000 remotes for over a month and one works great. The other stops working after being placed in its charger every once in a while, a total of about 10 times in 5 weeks. The remote starts working again when I remove the battery and reboot.

If this were a firmware or software issue I would expect that it should happen on both of my remotes. Since it only seems to happen on one unit very consistently, I am now thinking I have a defective 1000 which needs replacement.

Is this defective hardware?

Thanks in advance for a reply.

Larry

I would still try a firmware update as a first step in troubleshooting, whether the remotes are on different loads or one load may have been corrupted this may fix the issue. If that doesn't work it could be a hardware failure or an issue with the configuration (for example, a corrupted database entry).

Re: Harmony 1000 stops working, needs reboot

the firmware is the latest rev. Is there any way to reload the same rev again? The problem also existed with the prior firmware rev.

Also, how do I eliminate the possibility of a corrupted configuration being at fault? I assume merely downloading another copy to the 1000 won't solve this type of problem, or will it?

If you want to determine if it is the remote or software/firmware why don't you try reversing them. Take remote A and load B's configuration, take B and load A's configuration. If the problem changes to the other remote then it is software/firmware. If it stays with the original remote then it would be hardware.

I've done the switch and both remotes are reloaded with the other's image. The outcome may not be known for days based on the experiences of rebooting every few days reported in my original post. I will update this thread as soon as anything noteworthy occurs.

Nice to have 2 remotes to be able to do that. I have an issue where over time my remote gets slow. If I had 2 remotes I could determine if it was hardware or not.  But I do not so I force a reboot of my remote every week or 2. Seems to help.

Seems like a very useful way to solve this specific problem. Very few items I own 2 identical copies.....

Re: Harmony 1000 stops working, needs reboot

5 days have passed and the problem has not reappeared. Hope that the swap fixed the issue but only time will tell. If this is indeed a solution then I guess the cause was most likely a bad download in the prior setup corrected by another download. Can't otherwise explain why a hardware swap would fix the problem if one of the remotes has a hardware defect.

Yes, I would agree. If the problem does not come back then something was corrupt and a new download fixed it.

Good luck,
