Harmony 880 simply stopped working

I don't know how else to say it... my 880 just stopped working overnight. Nobody dropped it on the floor, nobody threw it anywhere.. we always treat the remote with care, not at last because I'm well aware of how much money I spent on it :smileyhappy:. I love my 880 and now that it doesn't work I notice just how much I miss it. Using all the remotes for the hardware in my apartment is just plain annoying.. it reminds me just why I bought my 880 in the first place.

To get to the point, here's the situation: the IR commands do nothing. The remote's display still works flawlessly, as before, but not a single command is registered. Everything worked before.. the programmed activities, individual device control, the help system.. everything worked fine and the commands were accepted by my TV, DVD player, PS2, Xbox360... and now, suddenly, nothing works. I can see the "signal sending" icon appear near the upper edge of the display whenever I press a button that sends IR commands.. but none of my hardware responds. I'm afraid my IR "lights" may have bitten the dust.. but I don't see a way to know for sure. All I know is that suddenly, the remote completely stopped working.

I've tried taking out the battery pack and resetting it and then retrying multiple times. I also set aside the remote for a few days to then again try using it as well as taking out and replacing the battery--still nothing.

Any ideas or suggestions before I give Logitech a call?

Thanks

Re: Harmony 880 simply stopped working

Well I didn't touch the firmware or anything. I'm running Vista and a Vista version of the Harmony software for Windows has not yet been made available by Logitech. Sometime in April, it will. Still, I think this is a hardware problem with the IR lamps that send the signals, rather than with the software on the remote.. either way it **bleep** to have your beloved Harmony remote simply STOP working overnight. Literally overnight.

Re: Harmony 880 simply stopped working

Mine also did the same thing (15 months old).  I went through the Tech Support and basically they reconfirmed that my IR LED's were bad.  You can take a digital camera or camcorder....look at the remote through the LCD display and press some buttons that send signals to devices......you should be able to see white lights flickering.  When I tried this, I could see no lights........being skeptical I grabbed a known working remote.  I could see the lights, so this proved that my 880 had faulty IRLED's.

The tech support person said that it would be highly unlikely that they would honor any sort of replacement under warranty since the warranty is only for 12 months and that the warranty department would contact me via email within 3 working days.  (BTW, today is approximately 14 days since and no email).

I decided to take matters into my own hands since the warranty department didn't contact me (what did I have to lose right?  my $200 remote was broke and they weren't about to replace it or even help me out)......I open the remote to find that the Harmony 880 has two IR led emitter's in the front of the remote.  I went to Radio Shack and bought two of them for $1.99 brought them home, removed the old ones with a soldering iron and replaced them.

This worked!!!!!  The remote was back in working order again!!!!!!  Its been a week and the remote is still functioning 100%.

Re: Harmony 880 simply stopped working

I have to say that's a pretty awesome story :smileyhappy:. Thanks for that!

I knew something like that about infrared light sources and cameras.. and I just tested it with my digicam's seeker monitor and a few remotes I have that do work, and what you said was confirmed perfectly. My Harmony does not show any visible lights even when I press buttons that do send commands.. and my other remotes that work do. White lights are visible, just as you said.

For me it's also been 4 or 5 days now, and nobody has contacted me. I will just call them again and see how that goes. It's nice to know that if all else fails, I may still be able to fix this thing with the method you described. Buy LED's from Radioshack and stick those inside.. that was a pretty cool idea, I have to admit. And what's even cooler is that it actually ended up working! Great stuff.

Thanks for sharing.

Re: Harmony 880 simply stopped working

Whoa! I was going to buy one of these, but I just changed my mind. Not so much because of the breakdown(great job of fixing that), but because Logitech has offered so little help. I mean, how many days are you supposed to wait for contact back from them.

Of course, with the way support quality has diminished maybe that's what they are looking for, self supporting customers. The price would have to come way down for me to agree to that. I'll keep my money.

Re: Harmony 880 simply stopped working

Things ended up very nicely for me. Although Logitech promised to send me an email within three business days of my initial support call, that never happened. Seven days passed and I decided to give them another call. I got to talk with a level 2 support guy who was very helpful on the phone. I told him I'd tried the trick with the digital camera sensing IR light and confirmed that my Harmony's IR lights were shot. I also told him about the RMA info I was supposed to have gotten within three business days... he then told me that ALL RMA requests must go through level 2 support and that level 1 support guys cannot issue RMA requests. The reason my RMA case never got properly handled is because some dude in level 1 told me about the RMA and then maybe forgot to forward it to level 2.. either way, since he was level 2, he immediately set me up and a day or two later, I got an email telling me that a new Harmony 880 has been shipped my way! All I have to do is send them back the old one once I get the new one.

Worked out rather well. All it took was a second call. No big deal :smileyhappy:

Re: Harmony 880 simply stopped working

I have run into the same issue of the IR LED not working. I'm considering replacing it myself. Can someone please point me to the replacement LED on RadioShack.com? Is this the right one...

Re: Harmony 880 simply stopped working

Hi,

definitly not! These are for lighting puposes. What you need are IR-Emitters. A quick search on RS-Website brought me to these:

But i'm not sure if they fit into the Harmony.
