Harmony 880 and Dish Network VIP 612

My first Harmony and I'm liking it so far. My issue is I was having trouble powering on the VIP 612. At first, it was not responding at all. I read that you needed to change the remote address on the VIP 612. I did and that allowed me to power on the VIP 612. But when I added it to my activity, everything would power up except the VIP 612. It would power up with the Help button. I called tech support and the rep told me I had it set to stay on all the time. She changed it from stay on to power off when not in use and now everything works great. I guess my question is, can I not have it to stay on all the time. For example, if I want to switch from watching the VIP 612 to a different activity, can I not have the VIP 612 stay on until I power evrything down? Thanks in advance.

Yes you can, in the activity that uses the Dish receiver, click on the Settings tab, click on Change options, select Leave on unused devices.  This will leave on all devices used in the Activity when changing Activities that do not include any of those devices.  So if you have your Dish receiver on and your Amplifier on they will stay on even if not need in the nextActivity.  The Off button will still turn everything off when pressed.

Re: Harmony 880 and Dish Network VIP 612

Thanks for the prompt reply. I have 1 more question. My Watch TV activity consists of my TV, Dish VIP 612, and my surround sound. I want to customize a button that will turn off just the surround sound when it gets late at night. If I customize a button for this and just turn off the surround sound, when I want to power everything off at a later time, will the surround sound power on? Thanks in advance.

Re: Harmony 880 and Dish Network VIP 612

the best way to handle this is to create another activity that doesn't involve the surround sound.  when it gets late at night, simply press the activities button and select the 'Watch TV' activity. (I'll assume you would rename the current one to "Watch TV SS" for watch tv surround sound).  the remote will know that the tv and dish are already on and at the right input, so they'll remain unchanged...however the remote will realize the surround sound needs to be off and it will get turned off.  because this happens by way of an activity, the remote is aware of this and the 'off' button will work correctly at the end of the night.

Re: Harmony 880 and Dish Network VIP 612

Once again, thanks for the prompt reply. I actually just finished doing what you suggested. I created another activity called TV w/o Surround. And for this particular activity, I set it to turn off unused devices. Once again, thanks guys.

I've had the Harmony for a couple of years and it worked well on previous PVRs.  Unfortunately, the DISH VIP612 has defeated me.  I cannot get it to work.  How did you make it happen?  How did you change the remote address?  I'm in the manual and it only walks you through changing the current remote.  When I program the Harmony 880, the only option it gives me on the LCD is Live TV.  Is this correct?  Any help is appreciated.

Question For mane Did your recevier set up with discrete power on/offs or a toggle?

For Stain

1. Click 'Settings' from the Device tab for the Device in question.
2. Select "Confirm infrared commands", Click 'Next'
3. Select 'Yes - I have a remote for this device', click 'Next'

4. Follow the wizard to send a few infrared commands to the Harmony.
