Harmony Remotes - Programming

I am helping a friend with programming a new Harmony 890.  On the 'Watch TV' activity when I change TV channel the remote changes the TV channel instead of changing the cable TV box channel.  What am I doing wrong?

Welcome to the forum.

It sounds like you've taken the automatic method for setting up the Activity.

Always take the manual, then you get to specify which device does what.

You may be able to correct that Activity by Customising Buttons to the right device.

Hey Don.  I had a similar issue with the volume controls.  I actually use the DVR/cable box to control the volume right now.  It is a pretty easy fix using the manual setup options in the software (and then resyncing everything with the USB cable).  The screen I recall using had a list of all possible buttons, their corresponding function, and the device to which that function was connected.  The device displays in a dropdown menu.  All I had to do was select the Cable Box instead of the TV for the Volume Up and Volume Down buttons/functions.

It's better though to get it right in the first place, by specifying during the setup of the Activity which device is to control the volume.

Thanks.  Using the manual control options solved the problem.  The only comment I might make about this problem is why Logitech would assume that the user would want to change TV channels at the TV when a cable box is included in the setup.

That's OK.

I've never used the automatic  method, and did not know that an automatic WatchTV(....cable....) Activity sets the channel buttons to control the TV, but that is unsatisfactory.

I did the automatic setup for Watch TV and only had the volume button issues.  It did not ask me to specify which device controls volume.  Assumed TV, I guess.  Channel buttons were okay.

Assumed TV - correct - that's what I consider unsatisfactory.

So, to any new users, never use the automatic method!
