Software refuses to add activitity of either playing Movie (through Media Center) or DVD player - saying the computer / device doesn't have anything that can play a DVD.

When setting up a new Activity, select to do it Manually rather that Automatic. You can then select your DVD player or your PC
this piece of advice is something that's been added to the new FAQ sticky....Eric is a bit backed up at the moment, but hopefully the new sticky gets up soon.
sadly, it's so long now it needs to be split into a few posts
(Note: I am not affiliated with Logitech®, Inc.) Have you seen the FAQ Sticky? Useful Links Definition of Delays

I have tried adding manually as well - no luck, same error message. How do I blow away all knowledge of the database and start over? It seems like the software has somewhere decided that the Sony does not have a DVD and playing Videos via MCE also 'requires' a DVD. I don't know what to do other than uninstall and reinstall.

OK Andy.
Try setting up a Utility Activity, which allows you to specify exactly which devices you want or do not want to be included in it.
You will have to Customise all the buttons to the appropriate commands from each device that you include, but you should be able to get that up and running.
Let us know how you get on.
