Harmony Remotes

I'm considering buying our elderly parents a ONE. I'd like to make sure it has all their components in the DB and I'd like to get it configured in advance of buying the remote. I live in AZ and they're in Canada - where I will eventually buy the remote. 

Can I use my current ONE as the guinea pig to make sure I can find all their devices & get them setup in advance?  I don't want to loose the settings for my ONE.  If I create a second login to use as my testbed, will I be able to reset my ONE to its current setting by logging in under my original ID and connecting the ONE?

When I start to setup the new (2nd) login, it wants me to plug in the remote.  If I do this, do I have to do anything special to keep it from messing up the remote's current configuration?

The new account can't know anything about the current configuration and do anything with it.
