Why does the backlight come on occassionally?  Does it light up if it notices movement or does it randomly turn on?

It's a very sensitive vibration detector, chances are it's being set off just by walking near it or by a loud truck rumbling by.  IIRC once it's been set off there's a timer before it reactivates.
