I have a Harmony 890 and had the same issue back in June 08. Similar to the response here I did get a replacement remote. I was very happy with the process, I just had to pay to mail the faulty remote back.
BUT... now the "replacement" has the same issue (6 months later). I just sent an email to Support... Lets see what happens...

My Harmony 670 has succumbed to a similar demise.
The remote prompted a battery replacement.
Batteries were replaced with new, same-brand, AAA batteries.
The remote continued to ask for a battery replacement, and would not control devices.
Remote then requested Safe Mode.
Updated firmware.
The remote still asked for a battery replacement, and would not control devices.
When buttons were pressed, LCD screen would fade out and then shut off.
Logitech support issued the following diagnosis:
BattDevices not responding properly - OWC
I wasn't as lucky as others as far as getting a solution:
"We are sorry to hear about your defective Harmony Remote. Your account information indicates that your remote is out of warranty and so we are unable to offer you a replacement unit.
Unfortunately, we will be unable to repair the remote.
If you would like to purchase a replacement remote, we are willing to offer you a special discount of 50 % off any Harmony Model from our web store."
Now the remote is completely dead, and I'm debating whether or not to purchase another.

My First Harmony Remote (a 670) lasted ~14 months then succumbed to battery failure after ~1-2 Days (4 AAA Alkalines). I figured maybe I got a bad one so picked up two 659's from a local store (one for me and another for my wife). After 6 months one (the one that is rarely used) is eating batteries the same way. They told us the same safe mode firmware update and reload. We did it and it has made is more than one day now I hope it keeps working. If so I will try the fix on the 670 and see how it does.
Clearly they have something wrong with their initial design/firmware. Out of my three remotes two have had this failure. Though to their credit one of those may be O.K. we will see in another week or two.
Just as a note my 670 got faster and faster at eating batteries first set lasted ~9 months with moderate use of the light. the next set lasted no more than ~6 weeks with no light at all. Then by the fifth set they were not lasting more than a couple of days.

I have had my 670 about 18 months and the screen has been blank for at least three months. I will contact customer support and report back what happens.

I had the exact same problem and it happened right after Christmas, I contacted customer support and they told me to do the firmware update and all that jazz....Nothing they told me to do worked. I think that is just what they are trained to tell you at first. This seems to be a big problem with the 670, but they are no longer making the 670......... BUT......They handled my matter in a very timely manner and replaced my Harmony 670 with a brand new Harmony 700! I first contacted customer support on Dec 28 and to day I received my new remote 6 days later. I am very impressed with the turn around time!!!

@ Father of 2
how long did you have yout 670? Was it under warranty?
my 670s screen went blank 3 days ago and it is out of warranty. I only used it for 6 months but since I hooked it up to test long before they will not honor the warranty.
thx for the info

I realize I am replying to a 4 year old posting, but just as rediculous is the fact that Logitech has not done a thing to change their support of broken products in those 4 years!!! I have a Harmony 900 with broken screen. I called customer support to see how I should get it repaired and they said they don't repair them!!! Forget the thought of it being covered by warranty - they just flat out don't repair them or offer any support!!! AND they are gave me the same pitch - "you can buy another one of our remotes on our website"!!! WHY WOULD I BUY ANOTHER REMOTE?? I can't believe that was their suggested solution!!!
Pathetic!!
