Re: Home Lighting/Automation with Logitech880 ??

alright, looking further, I learned more...

turns out they have dimmers that work both on the wall and via the x-10, but they called them toggle dimmers or something.

still not sure about the power cord length (but as I mentioned, a short extension cord could solve that problem) or about the outlet lamps needing to be on all the time or not, but I could leave those out as I found a different product that could control my overhead light instead of the ones next to the couch.

here's what I'm looking at:
and possibly
2 Appliance Modules for the other lamps

free shipping at smarthome for orders over 150 means I could get it all for $199.92 or minus the last part for $163.94

assuming the fiancée agrees with me, I think I may be ordering the first three later tonight.
then I get to tweak the harmony remote:smileyvery-happy:

1.Yes you put the the ir543 so that you can point the 880 to it.
2. I would have to call you because my typing and english isn't the best when trying to explain things.
3. I been buying them off www.x10.com but to warn you do not give them your main email address or call them and order them . They will spam the **** out you.
4. This is the right one
http://cgi.ebay.com/X10-Infrared-Controller-IR543-Home-Automation
They are cheaper then the x1o web site wish i bought my stuff there.
5. The box let you turn on or off the light or apllances. It also lets you dim or bighten the lights. Another warning i can not get the 880 to dim the lights. It ether off or on. I guess it as to with the remote does not send a signal continusly to the light switch. You have hold down the light switch button for the light to dim or brighten.
6. no you do not need the wireless transceiver.
7. as for the ziwave i would not know about that

Hope this helps

1.The ir543 acts as a wired mini remote. x10 uses radio waves but the 880 is ir only so you have to use the ir543 to change it from ir to radio.
2. As i reported in Driver8rms post stating i can not get the 880 to dim the lights. i guess it as to with the remote does not send a signal continusly to the light switch. It is ether off or on. You have hold down the light switch button for the light to dim or brighten the lights.
3. the power cord is alittle over 6 foot long.
4. check this site out it might be cheaper.
http://cgi.ebay.com/X10-Infrared-Controller-IR543-Home-Automation
if you deal with ebay. I wish i knew about the site.
5. The ones that i use you can dim or bighten the light from the light switch or the mini controller but i have not found a way to use the 880 to dim the lights
hopefully i helped you out

1. I don't think the x10 uses radio waves. I'm pretty sure it uses the electrical wiring in your home
http://www.smarthome.com/about_x10.html

from that site:
WHAT IS X10?

X10 is a communications "language" that allows compatible products to talk to each other using the existing electrical wiring in the home. Most X10 compatible products are very affordable and the fact that they talk over existing wires in your home means that no costly rewiring is necessary. Installation is simple, a transmitter plugs (or wires) in at one location in the home and sends its control signal (on, off, dim, bright, etc.) to a receiver which plugs (or wires) into another location in the home.

2. no big deal, on and off is the real functionality I'm looking for

3. awesome

4. the x-10 express store via ebay is definitely cheaper, about half price, for the IR543, but unfortunately, via a quick search, I did not see the other parts I was looking for. if I don't order the IR543 from smarthome.com, then my total goes under 150 and I have to pay $10 for shipping, chewing up almost all the savings by getting the IR543 from ebay (not to mention the ebay store would require shipping costs as well). So in my case, it might be easier just to go through smarthome.com

5. as I mentioned, I found some that did work both at the switch and via the x-10.

you were very helpful, so thanks for your input and knowledge

now, I have to take off a cover because one of the switches I was looking at is actually under a double cover (i.e. two switches under one plate cover). I'm not sure if it's one electrical switch under there in a wider box, or two separate boxes. that could be a major kink in my plans

I was wrong about the 880 not being able to dim the lights. When you add the device it will have a srceen that will have dim bright all off or all on plus no 10-15 on it. Sorry for the missed information

You can use the controller in turning on or off light when you use a activity
here's how

1. click activity
2. click review the setting for this activity
3. next
4. click yes but i want to add more control of option's devices for this activity
5. next
6. Then there will be a screen with devices in use on the top and devices not in use below. click add x10 pro light controller.
7. save
8. then it will go threw you inputs and setup do this untill you get to a screen that reads please review the action for ????? what activity you are on.
change add action for the x10 pro light controller when activity starts then use the function in the drop down box. repeat as nessary for the start the for the turn off

I hope i explained this good enough for you
