IR Power seems very low, must be very close to the unit for IR command to work

[ Edited ]

I have to hold the remote literally inches away from whatever unit i'm trying to control for the command to work.  The RF part is working great.  The wireless extender is working fine.  But for the 2 units (TV and Receiver) that i control directly line-of-sight from the remote via IR, I must have the remote within inches to make the command work.

This is the 2nd 890 for me.  The first one worked great (ie, i didn't have this problem), but it went dead.  I bought this one, transferred my settings to the new one, but now I have this problem

any ideas are appreciated.

thanks

Re: IR Power seems very low, must be very close to the unit for IR command to work

For anybody that cares....

I did fix the issue.  The issue was not software or settings related, it was the IR LED itself.  I had my old 890 laying around so I was able to steal one of the LED's from the old one, and install it into the "new" one.   This fixed the problem.

How to determine that your IR LED is good/bad:

  1. Open up the unit.  Careful, it's easy to break the case, or LCD, or the LCD flexcircuit cable when opening the case.
  2. Remove the PCB
  3. You'll need a mulimeter with a diode checker mode
  4. Check each of the IR LED's.  A "good" one will measure a voltage drop of ~ 1V.   A "bad" one will measure something different.  Mine measured 1.6 Volts

Good Luck
