Setting up alternate tv activity.

New to this sort of thing so here goes.  I have a Sony TV, Sony AV receiver and a Virgin V+ DVR.

So far I have set up the "watch tv"  using the the dvr and the tv. All seems to work fine.

However, there are times when I would want to get the benefit of the Dolby Digital sound so I am tring to set a second "watch tv" which will incorporate the av receiver as well as the tv and dvr. I have tried several ways of doing this but to no avail.

Where am I going wrong?

Re: Setting up alternate tv activity.

I have a bose receiver and at times want to receive dolby digital sound without going through the tv.  I took a different approach and and did not set up a alternative activity.  I set up a command within my watch tv activity to switch between my bose receiver and tv for audio only.It works fine

Re: Setting up alternate tv activity.

Set up a second Watch TV activity and use the AVR for sound when the software asks.

Re: Setting up alternate tv activity.

Hi driver and welcome to the forum.

Maybe you've been trying to get the system to set up the activity automatically, because if you do it by the normal manual method you get the option right away to have the receiver, not the TV, controlling the sound.

Re: Setting up alternate TV activity.

Thanks for the suggestions.  I have tried to set it up manually.  I get as far as "watch TV" and then it all seems to go wrong.  Next it asks me which devices I want to control.  At this stage I anticipated being able to use the devices already in the system. If I enter the devices again I end up with AV2, TV 2, cable box 2 with no way of associating them to the ".watch tv".

Going back to the "Activities" page I see that it has "watch tv2"

Obviously, I have failed to get to grips with something here....but what?

Re: Setting up alternate TV activity.

When you set up the Activity you had the options to specify which device was to display video, which to change channels, which to control volume, and which inputs the devices needed to be set to. Those details should now be available to you in WatchTV2. You should not need to use the Devices area at all. What are the problems with the new Activity?

Re: Setting up alternate TV activity.

When I click on "set up now" for "watch tv 2" the next screen says "none of your devices can change channel".  When I click on next it wants me to enter the devices again .  If I enter the devices it still says "None of your devices can change channel".    I just seem to be going aroun in circles,

Re: Setting up alternate TV activity.

When you setup Watch TV 2 activity, always select the manual method to setup the activity rather than the automatic method.

Re: Setting up alternate TV activity.

Finally cracked it!!!   I was selecting "DVR or PVR other than TiVO" because the Virgin + Box has a record and playback facility.   When I selected "Digital Cable, Basic Cable or Antenna" I was able to access the rest of the set up procedure.   Now to see if it works.

Once again, many thanks for your help.

That's OK, and I'm sorry to hear that the problem was caused by an annoying error in Logitech's database.

It often happens that it will not recognise that a device IS a DVR.

Of course your receiver IS a DVR, so the correct type of Activity for it is the one you first selected, which automatically provides all its specific aspects of functionality.

If you're satisfied with the result of using the other type that doesn't then that's fine, but if you'd rather have the correct type, then do as I had to do for two receivers - report it to Logitech and make sure they correct their error.
