Question about Logitech G35 headset...

Sorry for the newbish question here but I'm just getting back into computer gaming so I'm not as familiar with things as I once was. I wanted to get a good gaming headset for a new laptop I ordered and would like a surround sound one (such as the G35). I was told by the manufactuerer of the laptop that it only supports stereo sound but that headsets that use USB ports can bypass that and still offer a surround sound experience and looking at the information on the G35 here it seems to insinuate that as well. I was just wondering if this was in fact the case before I buy one.
