I bought my headset around 3 months ago, haven't had any problems until today. Awhile after loading a game, which lagged my PC for 5mins until I finally managed to close it, I noticed the sound through my headset sounded odd (not sure if the game would be the cause.. don't see why it would be).
Notification sounds on MSN are quieter, aswell as general sounds from my OS. When playing songs they sound dull and flat and the main vocals are much quieter than they should be and were before, and on some, the backing vocals are louder than they were.
My headset's connected via the USB adaptor which came with it, I'm running Windows XP, and my sound card is a Realtek AC97.
I've tried using the headset directly plugged into the soundcard, different media players, different songs just to check it wasn't only one, playing with the volume settings, different USB ports, rebooting the PC. When I play sounds through my speakers, everything sounds normal and as it should.
I don't get why this would suddenly happen. :\ Thanks in advance for any help.
Edit: Just found out that if I put the headphone jack only halfway into the USB adaptor, it sounds normal.

I would recommend testing the headset on another audio source (mp3 player, another computer) to see if the symptoms follow the headset.
