Keyboard Hot Key Assignments suddenly changed / stopped working

Hello….I have a strange problem never experienced before. I have an older Logitech Wireless keyboard from the Cordless Elite Duo combo set. The keyboard is model Y-RJ20.

I am running this keyboard (without iTouch) and an Optical Trackman mouse with SetPoint.  I have run this configuration for years with no issues.  A couple of days ago, the “hot keys” on the keyboard stopped working correctly.

For example:  the Mute button now toggles F-Lock. Email toggles Mute. Media opens browser as if it is the My Home key.  My Home opens Favorites. Play/Pause is Vol Up, while iTouch key is Vol Down….etc etc etc.

In trouble-shooting this issue, I downloaded and installed iTouch.  This did not make any difference, even though the iTouch assignments appeared as expected.  I manually went in and reassigned with no change.  I then uninstalled iTouch and SetPoint.  Reinstalled SetPoint and reconfigured the mouse (I have several custom button assignments on the mouse that I use for AutoCAD).  No change.

Finally, I called Logitech Support and was told iTouch is no longer supported.  The tech walked me though removing a couple of things from the reg (iTouch, MouseWare), but ultimately this made no difference.

iTouch is a moot point here, as I have been running this keyboard with no issue for years without it. All the things I use (Email, Messenger, Media Controls, Browser, etc) have all worked fine by default.  I presume this is from the standard Windows driver.  As a matter of fact, the ONLY oddity that I have ever had is that, when running iTunes, the Media controls (Play/Pause, Stop, Pre/Next) do not work when iTunes is minimized.

Clearly, there is something out of joint here that is even over-riding iTouch when I did install it for testing purposes. Having these buttons not function properly is not a show stopper, but it definitely messes with my flow as I am auto pilot on these things and use them all day for work.

Does anyone here have any thoughts as to what could cause this and is there a file I can look at / edit what is triggering what?  Any thoughts / assistance would be greatly appreciated.  My apologies for such a long post, but I wanted to make sure that the issue is described clearly, along with what I have done to date, that this has been working for years, I have not made any changes (knowingly) to my PC and to triple note that this does NOT appear to be iTouch related in any way.

This is running on a laptop, Win XP.

Thank you in advanced!

Re: Keyboard Hot Key Assignments suddenly changed / stopped working

Seems like your matrix got itself unaligned.

This could happen because:

1. you disassembled the keyboard yourself recently and didn't reassemble well

2. Some dirt got in the keyboard and is now shorting matrix contacts

3. Probably many other reasons I have no idea about

anyway, I think your only option is to disassemble the keyboard, clean the interior (matrix on all sides) and carefully reassemble. That is if a good shake with slapping and kbd turned to all sides doesn't help.

The point of both above procedures being that you find and eliminate the dirt that's causing you grief.

You have a good chance that the keyboard will work even worse after this procedure - you really have to know what you are doing, especially with the matrix - so weigh your risks before you jump.

Otherwise start looking for a new keyboard...

Re: Keyboard Hot Key Assignments suddenly changed / stopped working

Thanks for the reply.  Definitly have NOT disassembled the keyboard.  All of the keys are working.  As a keyboard, it is functioning just fine.  Its just the hot keys dont appear to be assigned correctly.  Keeping in mind that these hot keys are spead out across the top of the keyboard, I dont think that this is a "physical" issue (ie, dirt or misaligned contacts).

Also, this just suddenly happened.  The hot keys still funciton, just are not triggering the correct functions.

It seems to me to be more software related at the PC level.  Unfortunately, I do not have another computer to test with.

Thanks again for the reply, and I have begun looking at new keyboards just in case.  Considering a gaming keyboard wtih programmable keys (G Keys).  I could use these for hot keys in CAD that would probably be pretty slick.

Re: Keyboard Hot Key Assignments suddenly changed / stopped working

I very much doubt though that those function keys would behave any different on another computer. IMO the issue is purely HW, not SW. That said, I don't program the bloatware that is SetPoint and it's not my keyboard that malfunctions so I could be very wrong :smileyhappy:

Like I said, try shaking / slapping the keyboard. This is likely to help and certainly won't break it any further than it already is.

Yes, the G keyboards look great. They were certainly a contender when I was buying last month.

Re: Keyboard Hot Key Assignments suddenly changed / stopped working

I can report the exact same problem with my keyboard.  The keys have suddenly changed from what they were a few weeks ago.

Exact same functionality

Mute ==> F-Lock On/Off

Email ==>  Mute On/Off

Media  ==>  Browser

Favorites ==>  Media

I expeirence this same problem last week after changing the batteries.  My keys are even switched in the exact same manner as yours.  Did you ever find a solution?

Re: Keyboard Hot Key Assignments suddenly changed / stopped working

Hello all:

Thank you for posting your issue to the Logitech Community Forums.

If your issue is with your Keyboard:
1)remove batteries
2)act like you are typing a letter to someone and press random keys for 30 seconds
3)if possible, replace batteries with fresh batteries. If not then put original batteries back in
4)press the connect/reset button on receiver and let go
5)press the connect/reset button on the bottom of the keyboard

Hope this helps!

Re: Keyboard Hot Key Assignments suddenly changed / stopped working

Am using K260 and the hot keys are no longer properly after i reinstall my Windows 7 Pro 64 Bit. Its connected to USB-2 port on Gigabyte X79 UD3. The keyboard is recognized only as "HID keyboard device". All othe keys are working well including the wireless mouse. Battery is brand new. Definitely did not open the key board. Its also clean.

Its working well before i re-installed my O/S.

Problem: pressing hot keys for Play/Pause, Mute, Vol- and Vol+ are all opening up the Windows Internet Explorer app.
