Just bought Mom the MK520 wirless mouse and keyboard for Xmas, and the mouse / system now periodically freezes forcing a hard reboot of her Windows Home Premium 32 bit system ( ouch ! ).
I have uninstalled Setpoint software and checked that the Unifying software is aware of both devices but still no luck.
I tried reconnecting them.
The USB receiver is plugged in securely using one of the rear USB ports.
Any suggestions on how I can fix this problem ?

While much of Vanessa's advice makes sense, references to a "front USB port" can be misleading.
It is certainly nearer to your keyboard than rear receivers, but if the front USB comes off the motherboard, fine. If not, it might not work.
The aim is to connect to a USB that your PC will see on boot. Stuff that runs off add-in cards may not kick in until Windows starts.
If the wireless signal is an issue, better to try the extension cable that probably came with the keyboard and plug that into the rear.
As someone who has front USB stuff that runs off a PCI card, I am careful to avoid using that until I have confirmed that the PC will see it, and let me into the BIOS, before Windows kicks in.
To be honest, I don't think the USB location is likely to be an issue, but it is worth experimenting.
