Is the Unifying receiver being detected by the computer?
Which Operating System are you using?
Have you done the things in the following FAQ?
Please let me know what happens.

Yes, the Unitying receiver is detected in the device manager but when I open the unifying software to run through the connection process, the second page asks me to plug in the receiver and press next when it is detected but detection never occurs. I haven't looked at your link yet but it says "connecting a device to a Unifying receiver" and it seems what I need is "connecting a Unifying receiver to your PC".
P.S. I'm running Windows 7.

If this issue persist, there's probably a hardware failure with the Unifying receiver, you can purchase a new receiver on Logitech Part Store.
