wierd trackball behavior

I have been experiencing odd trackball (Trackman Marble or Trackman Marble+) behavior over the past week or so. For example, it snaps to the far left monitor (I have 4 monitors in use concurrently) and right clicks on its own, or snaps to the far right and goes into drag lock own its own. Sometimes it looks as if it is trying to run a script or something, clicking, selecting and moving on its own for 3 - 4 seconds. This only happens when I am actually moving the cursor with the trackball.

The trackball is a Logitech Trackman Marble attached via the PS/2 port. I also have 2 more Logitech USB mice in use concurrently, and I can use them all day with no problem. (I have been using this same setup for just over a year with no problems until this week.)

I replaced the TrackMan Marble with a TrackMan Marble+ (the scrollwheel version, also PS/2) and it does the same thing, yet both work fine on another machine, so it's not the trackball. I can plug in an old PS/2 mouse and it works fine, so it's not the PS/2 port on the computer. I can plug the trackball into the serial port or a USB adaptor and it works fine, except that it can't be programmed because it is not recognized as a Logitech device, so this is not an option. I have uninstalled the Logitech software (mouseware) completely (manual registry entries, deleting common files and Logitech directory, etc.) and reinstalled 3 times with no change. The same issue occurs even with native Microsoft mouse drivers.  Everything else seems to be functioning perfectly.

Update - I have now re-installed WinXP from scratch, with h/d format and I still have the same issue - what the heck is going on??

I have used a trackball as my primary input device for 12 years and I really don't want to give it up now. Any thoughts / suggestions appreciated.
