I just bought this mouse today and everything works fine except for the scroll wheel in the non-smooth mode. when ever I scroll up or down it makes the mouse rattle inside and makes an unpleasant noise. I compared the scrolling sound with my g5 mouse and the g5 had a much more solid scrolling sound. Is this a defect or just intended since the g9 has a mechanical switch for the scroll modes.

Things like sound are really hard to judge over text. Try scrolling with the cover and the weight tray removed. Check out your local retailer and see if they have a G9 you can play with there (to test the sound of a different G9 scroll wheel). To me, the G5 and G9 sound roughly the same, but your ears might be picking up something different from what I can hear.

thanks for those tips, I will have to try them out. But the thing is, when I scroll up the sound it makes is similar to my g5, it is only when I scroll down that it gets the rumbling sensation.

For me, my G9 doesn´t make any different sounds up or down. If I were you, I would start searching the receipt.

It does sound like a hardware defect. Please send an e-mail to Customer Support if you'd like to acquire a warranty replacement. It'll  be best if you can provide a reaceipt, but it is still possible to process the replacement without one.
