Re: Logitech MX Revolution Sticking/Lag/Stuttering Problem!

[ Edited ]
I had a replacement mouse sent by logitech for the studdering issue, and the new one has the exact same problem. This is clearly a design problem with the transmitter/receiver. I have to say I have begun to HATE this mouse, as this problem is extemely annoying. I have a old MX1000 laser mouse that I love, and I'd trade the revolution mouse for a used MX1000 any day. The Revolution is a piece of junk.

Re: Logitech MX Revolution Sticking/Lag/Stuttering Problem!

I've had an MX R' for about two months.. I use it about 12hrs a day, and have never had a problem.

One thing I've noticed I'm doing differently than everyone else is, I don't use the softare.

I use it at home, and I toss it in my bag and take it to work, cuz it's just that good.

I don't use the software at either location, and I've never had a problem with it. It may've taken a few bumps too from being in transit all the time, but it's still scary accurate.

I'd say lose the software - I used it for about 2 minutes before I realized it was quelching the experience.

Just my 2 cents. Hope you guys get these probs sorted out, and or Logitech apologizes and replaces your junkers.

(lol - "logitech" isn't recognized by the forum dictionary. Nice)

Re: Logitech MX Revolution Sticking/Lag/Stuttering Problem!

Setpoint isn't the problem. I haven't had it installed since I got the mouse and I still have the problem. It has nothing to do with the software and everything to do with interference that the receiver is forced to accept.

Hey Logitech! YOUR REVOLUTION IS A PIECE OF CRAP! SELL A MOUSE THAT ACTUALLY CONNECTS WELL AND I'LL LOVE YOU GUYS AGAIN!

Re: Logitech MX Revolution Sticking/Lag/Stuttering Problem!

I have ran through the first part of this thread. It was enough. I would say I am disappointed, too. As I have experienced lagging appears when my system generates high network traffic (I have a USB wireless adapter) or high CPU usage. For example now foobar2000 running with a few DSP and my mouse is simply unusable. And unfortunately every game generate high CPU usage, so gaming with a revolution is impossible. However it is interesting, that sometimes there is absolutely no problem.

Re: Logitech MX Revolution Sticking/Lag/Stuttering Problem!

[ Edited ]
It seem that these mice aren't that robust. I have two of these mice, and the one for my secondary computer just decided that it won't recharge anymore. Now I have to replace it which is a nuisance since I bought it from internet, which means posting packages and delay.
And then it happened that also my primary mouse broke. One moment scroll wheel was functioning normally, the next moment it didn't spin freely anymore.
What had happened was that the axle of the wheel had snapped in half. Or more precisely, the axle on the right side of the wheel had snapped. I have no idea why, since I had used my mouse quite normally. The other strange thing is that I have no idea where that broken off piece went. Apparently it just dissolved in the air or shifted to some parallel universe or something. What ever the case, I never found the missing piece. The most annoying thing is that this is the second time this exact same thing has happened. So I went to the shop I had bought the mouse and got a replacement. A third one. In just over a year.

When I opened the box I noticed that the power indicator led had different battery symbol on it. Otherwise it is same as the old one.
SetPoint calls this new mouse MX Revolution mk2 and lost some of my settings. Eventually I re-installed SetPoint and then uberOptions (http://www.mstar.net/users/rlowens/uberOptions/) to remove those awful pre-set program settings which you cannot get rid of without either installing uberOptions or manually editing some of the xml-files found in various SetPoint folders. Or at least couldn't in earlier versions of SetPoint.
Fortunately uberOptions solved all my settings related problems and everything works great.

In a hope that this mk2-version has fixed the lag issue, I moved the receiver further away from the mouse than before to test it. As of now I haven't noticed any pointer-lag, but that doesn't necessarily mean anything since with the older mice the lag has been somewhat random. So we just have to wait and see. I let you know if there is any development in the case.

IF the lag issue has been fixed, I can only conclude that it is very disappointing that Logitech hasn't informed us of the situation.
On the other hand I do understand what could cause this behaviour: from the point of view of a large company, there isn't any problem as long you don't admit it. The moment you admit it, you inform the customers - even those that haven't noticed anything before - that there could be a problem with the product and thus could be facing lots of demands of mouse replacements ...which could be costly. Or even a law suite (which seems to be quite popular in certain parts of the world...) to pay ridiculous amounts of money to compensate for ridiculously small problems.

Anyway, time will tell which ever the case might be. Until then...

Oh, P.S. I've been experimenting with Nerdix ...sorry, Linux recently and have found that the lag problem is not caused by SetPoint (at least not completely) since with openSUSE 11.0 I experienced pointer lag a few times.

So just for your info,

I exchanged my first MX Rev for a new one from Amazon, while still in my return period, and it was better, but I still got just a few random stutters. Just a few is still unacceptable, especially when all other mice I've used (especially the MX1000) work so well. I'll be buying an extra MX1000 I think, hopefully I can find a new one.

The new MX is also going back, by the way.

Re: Logitech MX Revolution Sticking/Lag/Stuttering Problem!

[ Edited ]
Hello,

I've recently bought one of these mice and, surprise-surprise, here I am searching the Net for "logitech mx revolution stuttering" :smileysad:

Anyway, I think we should try and more accurately pinpoint the problem, especially since Logitech seems to not acknowledge it and only deals with individual cases. Maybe that way we can write a guide with troubleshooting and workarounds for the ones that still have the issue after 3 replacements...
Frankly, if this were any other product I wouldn't hesitate to dump it and buy something else, however for me the mouse truly is revolutionary -- I can't use a "normal" one without missing it anymore, it's like the difference between having a scroll wheel and not. That's why this problem is even more frustrating, the device would've been perfect but the lag problem can render it unusable!

So, I'll start by summarizing what we know so far:

1. The problem seems to affect MX Revolution mice, although some people report issues with other models as well, most agree that previous models work perfectly in the same environment. I can concur this is the case, I have an older MX1000 that works flawlessly.

2. Drivers/Operating system are not involved. I use both VistaUltimate x64 and Ubuntu Linux x64 and the mouse behaves absolutely the same. However, this does not preclude an issue with software settings! What I mean by that -- this is the first mouse I know of that is actually bi-directional, in that it can receive commands from the computer. It also stores settings and configuration in on-board memory (I have tested this). Therefore, a particular setting modified by SetPoint in Win will still be active in Linux after a cold boot -- so this leaves open an avenue of research.

3. The most obvious cause: interference. I must admit I was somewhat apprehensive when I saw the mouse operated in the 2.4Ghz spectrum. I still do not understand why they did this -- previous wireless mice used the 27Mhz band if I am not mistaken, and while I can see the advantage of cheaper components (since everything is 2.4Ghz these days) and marketing alure, it clearly has the disadvantage of the far more crowded band. Alas, previous bluetooth models exist that operate in the same range -- I even used one made by Acer for a little while -- that don't have any lag/stuttering issue. The problem becomes even more complicated:

a) some people have Wi-Fi, others don't, some even turned off their AP to test; however, this misses something that is out of our control -- *other* Wi-Fi AP's in the vicinity! In my case, there are at least 3 networks I can connect to besides my own, not to mention other devices in the 2.4Ghz spectrum that are not Wi-Fi (long-range radios, microwaves, etc.). So if the mouse is in fact susceptible to interference, all of these could cause it and there is no good way to test unless we use a spectrum analyzer, but they are expensive specialized tools that few people have access to. Let's also not forget all the little bluetooth devices we may have around -- I have a laptop with BT, wireless headsets and a mobile phone but those are usually turned off. The computer with the mouse also has a BT dongle which is passive most of the time (also tested with it removed, and it doesn't influence anything).

b) there are other potential sources of radio interference, from devices that do not operate in 2.4Ghz -- in my case, there are two mobile phones (GSM), a wireless Microsoft keyboard (not 2.4) with it's own dongle and a DECT "fixed" phone. As in the previous case, neighbourhood devices may also interfere and we have no control/information over those.

c) we should not forget all the devices *inside* the computer that can cause interference. Some people have actually noted that high CPU loads can lead to stuttering -- albeit that can be caused by the OS not being able to cope. I can not reproduce that, but that doesn't mean anything -- there simply might be another device causing this, like the GPU, HDD, sound card or even power supply.

==> What I think is strange with all the interference discussion is that even the proposed workaround (because it is *not* a solution) of bringing the receiver close to the mouse does not solve it, it's more like 50/50, for some it works, for others not. So it is important to investigate other potential causes as well.

4. Other than the above, there may also be a hardware/firmware problem with the mouse. I for one have noticed a relation between stuttering and the mouse being "asleep" for a while -- for example, after long periods of typing without touching the mouse; however, it is not reproducible, it only seems to happen *more* in that case, but it still happens when the mouse is "hot".

All-in-all, the problem happens much too randomly to be easily diagnosed... Too bad Logitech doesn't want to work with the community to solve this -- it is no use to exchange 3 mice just to find out the problem persists, which has happened more than once. Still, maybe we can work without them and find out what happens :smileyhappy:

Best regards and keep tight,
Mihnea

Re: Logitech MX Revolution Sticking/Lag/Stuttering Problem!

I wish I would have read this thread before purchasing the "world's most advanced mouse". I'm having the same stuttering issue with this mouse, specially noticeable with games.

I have messed with the SetPoint software, tried change my router's Wi-Fi frequency and even moving the receiver closer to the mouse, but no fix.

As many users have commented before it doesn't seem like getting a replacement will fix the issues. So I will have to either return this and get another mouse or wait until Logitech fixes the issue, perhaps a driver fix?

Re: Logitech MX Revolution Sticking/Lag/Stuttering Problem!

[ Edited ]
Just read this thread after posting a response on another thread relating to the same stuttering issues. I thought I would repost my response from the other thread here:

Well, looks like I finally found a thread where we're all having the same problems. However, seems like most, if not all the ppl on this thread are having issues with wireless mice and solutions regarding this have been hit or miss, mostly miss it seems. The weird thing is though, I'm using a WIRED Logitech MX518 gaming mouse and I'm getting the same stutter problems. I've also noticed the cpu usage spike on the performance tab of the Windows Task Manager. Why is that? I been trying to troubleshoot this for a couple days and have had no luck.

So far, it looks like the only time it happens is when I'm browsing the internet. I thought it was my browser at first. I was using the Firefox 3.0 with lastest update, so I downgraded to latest FF 2.0. Still didn't fix it. I tried using Internet Explorer 7.0 and 6.0 to no avail. I tried messing with bios settings and that didn't work. I tried using the latest Logitech setpoint software (4.6.1), tried downgrading the setpoint software, and eventually uninstalling the software...and still the stuttering persists. I tried connecting mouse with the ps/2 adapter it came with, and still the same problem. Eventually I changed to an older ps/2 logitech Mouseman ball mouse and it seemed to work fine.

One thing I do notice is the stuttering seems to happen mostly when I'm internet browsing with the browser window maximized and using a display resolution of 1920x1200. If I minimize the browser window to occupy only half the desktop space, the stuttering seems to stop. The stuttering also seems to stop when I lower the display resolution (I've only tried going down to 1280x1024 though). Is there a connection?

This mouse worked flawlessly on my previous setup:
-DFI Lanparty NFII motherboard
-AMD xp2400
-1 gig dual channel Corsair TwinX memory
-256mb agp 9800xt video card
-80gig ide Western Digital hd
-Plextor ide dvdr/rw writer
-Hyundai 19" L90d+
-32bit Windows xp professional sp2
-Logitech mx518 usb wired gaming mouse
-Logitech usb wired Wave Keyboard

Upgraded to: (and the trouble began soon after)
-Gigabyte ma78gm-s2h
-AMD x2 5600+ retail
-4 gigs dual channel OCZ Reaper Memory
-using integrated video
-320gig Samsung hd
-same Plextor drive as above
-Samsung 24" Widescreen 245bw monitor
-32bit Windoes xp professional sp2
-Logitech mx518 usb wired gaming mouse
-Logitech usb wired Wave Keyboard

UPDATE: 07/31/08 - Looks like my mouse stuttering has resolved...for now anyway. And, unfortunately or fortunately depending on how you folks look at it, the problem didn't appear to stem from the mouse. The stuttering effect mainly happened while I was internet browsing, so I eventually began troubleshooting the network side of things after unsuccessfully trying to troublshoot my MX518 mouse for a few days. Ultimately, I ended up fiddling and resetting my wireless network router. This in turn seemed to fix the stuttering issue I was having while surfing. Oh well, I'm just glad it's fixed.

Good luck to the rest of you folks.
