My Microsoft mouse died the other day, so I did some online research and comparison shopping and decided to try Logitech again.
I just bought the MX400 3 days ago, and downloaded SetPoint 3.3 for XP, which I was forced to get from a shareware site because logitech.com wouldn't allow me to download it, saying it wasn't available for my product, yet SetPoint clearly recognizes the MX400.
In the device manager, the mouse is seen as the MX320. I should point out that I never installed the version of SetPoint that came with the mouse, version 2.49a, and I'm using XP Pro.
The mouse has lost my button settings twice now, even though SetPoint showed they were as I set them. So I reset my settings and clicked Apply and they work fine again.
Also, on occasion, my pointer will stop moving for a fraction of a second, like the laser isn't tracking. I use a solid black Steelpad QcK+ mousepad.
The middle button click is very stiff and it's hard to tell I've even clicked it because it's not a solid positive click, it's kind of soft really.
Is this normal of the middle click, or should I return it to the store for another?
Don't get me wrong, I really like the MX400. It looks like a work of art, it feels good in my hand, it's well contoured, and has the exact features I want, but your software still needs work.

Can you try performing a Clean Boot and then installing SetPoint 3.3 once again. As for the stiff middle click button, it would be best that you take the mouse back to the store and test it out there. You may be able to compare 2 or more mouses.

I have avoided Logitech products for over 20 years because of bad software in the past, and I'm quickly finding out that not much has changed, unless I just got a lemon this time. Logitech hardware has always been top notch, however.

UPDATE: I exchanged the MX400 for another of the same model. The people at BestBuy let me open the package to make sure the buttons were all acceptable and they are. However, nothing else has changed. In fact, it's gone downhill. XP still thinks this mouse is the MX320, and SetPoint 3.30 now won't show a picture of the MX400 like it did before.
Logitech seriously needs to hire some real programmers who know what they are doing. Your software is still terrible, and your hardware is slipping. I won't be buying or recommending Logitech products in the future.
EDIT: Ditched SetPoint 3.3 since it's total trash, and went with 3.10. Got the image thing fixed thanks to the uberOptions author's site, Thank you. Finally XP recognizes the MX400 correctly and SetPoint now shows the correct mouse image instead of a generic image.
It's pretty sad when it takes a single customer to fix a giant company's horrible software, yet that company can't seem to do it themselves.
Update: Well since SetPoint is garbage, UberOptions doesn't work right either. This is the last time I ever buy a Logitech product. You thieves got my $40 this time. It won't happen again.

Reinstalling SetPoint didn't change anything. I'll be returning this mouse to BestBuy on Friday for another one. I really hope the middle click is just wonky on this one and not all of them.
