This is what worked for my MX610 that was doing the same thing.
- Take out the batteries.
- Hold both left and right buttons down for at least 30 seconds.
- Put the batteries back in.

Besides palmrd, suggestion, adjusting the double click speed in mouse properties sometimes helps with this. On the other hand , if it turns out to be a hardware problem, your best bet would be to contact Customer Support and request a warranty replacement.
