When Anywhere MX is at rest, mouse cursor slides down the screen

[ Edited ]

Last fall I bought an Anywhere MX mouse for use with my MacBook Pro (with Snow Leopard).  I bought it specifically for use on a marble countertop, where mice without the Darkfield technology do not work well.  Until recently, it has worked great.  Now, when at rest on the marble surface, without me touching it, the mouse cursor travels down the screen.  It is not a uniform motion.  Sometimes the cursor does not start moving for a few seconds, and may stop for a second or two before resuming its travel.  It always reaches the bottom of the screen and never travels upward, toward the top of the screen.  The cursor may move to the left or the right as it falls.  It looks a little drunk as it stumbles down the screen.  Turned the mouse 90, 180 or 270 degrees makes no difference.  Neither does installing fresh batteries (which I've done a couple of times) or placing the mouse right next to the tiny receiver plugged into the USB port.  If I place the mouse on a sheet of paper, rather than on the marble counter, it works just fine, so the problem appears to be related to the Darkfield technology.

As the mouse is still under warranty, I plan to contact Logitech Tech Support, but I'm interested in knowing if anyone reading this has experienced or heard of this problem, and possible remedies.
