Can the Logitech Unifying receiver be used to connect to my old Logitech MX600 mouse?
I don't insisnt on being able to connect the keyboard, just the mouse, because the old cordless receiver is too big and unwieldy, but i can't find anywhere where it says that i can or can't connect the MX600 mouse

Unless a device has the small orange "unifying" logo it is not likely to work with a unifying receiver.
Logitech has pushed out a few devices that will "break the rules", but there is no way of finding out apart from trying it.
You can do a bit of research by consulting the product pages for your devices. A search here will also show if anyone has been here with the same question. Practically every device has produced a query "will it work with a unifying receiver?" The answer is rarely "Yes".
The older the hardware, the lower your chances are of getting it to work with a "universal receiver".
