@Policestate:
i have this problem. this is my 3rd !!! G5 mouse and now i think this will be the last one.
i got a G5 in silver / red time ago as a gift. the mouse was excellent, but after a while it started to reset itself. during gaming, than even during working. first it started with the cable in front, where the cable hit the mouse. i could reproduce the reseting after a while. then it started tp reset while moving around. or lifting up...
so i called the tech and they shifted me a replacement. wow! thnx, nice support.
some months later, on the 2nd G5 (still silver, red) the same errors. called the tech, they were kindley enough to send me the last G5.
now in the middle 2008 with my third G5 (in blue skin design) its starting again. the mouse looks like new, i love my mouse and besides i'm a gamer, i clean my mouse and look after it. i do not throwing it around.
the same errors again. now i can do the reset in 2 seconds period when i wish.
logitech, where is the problem with his mouse? can u help me or is there a trick how to fix it by himself? i mean, is there a production bug or something?
please help me, cause i want my logitech, and i need the design and numbers of buttons, but with such a huge error in 3 (!!!) hardwares i can not go and buy a logitech again.
by the way: my g15 keyboard works like charm after i bought it. this is stable.

The broken connection is a result of 2 problems I believe. 1 being the thin wires in the cable, and 2, there is no rubber gromment or buffer where the cable enters into the mouse. The wires break their connection and you will usually here the USB disconnect/ reconnect tones, and setpoint resets and loses the tabs. I've gone through 3 G5's already and own a G7 as well. On the 3 G5's I've replaced 1 mouse, and repaired the cables 4 times on the others. I will add that i've never had this problem with the G7, only the hard wired G5's. Every model of G5 that has been released.
A G5 Repair kit would be the ideal manner of fixing most of these mice. If logitech simply provided a new cable and new pads for their customers, 80 percent of them could repair their own mouse at very little cost to either logitech or their customers.
If your mouse is out of warranty, you can attempt the repair yourself if your good with electrical repairs. All you need is a small phillips and/or flat screwdriver, soldering iron, wire strippers/cutters, electrical tape or heat shrink, and a small X-acto knife. If it's under warranty, call them.
Unplug your mouse first and with the small flat blade screwdriver or knife, gently and carefully lift up and remove the mouse feet/sliders to access the screws on the bottom of the mouse. There are 5 screws in total. 2 under each big slider pad, and 1 hidden under the label where there is + symbol. You can just push the phillips screwdriver through that hole.
Once you separate the top from the bottom of the mouse, take a good look and mark the area where the cable enters the mouse. I find the area near the connector where there is some room for the bulk of the electrical tape or heatshrink can fit, and cut there, making sure there is enough of the wire left on the connector to work with, about half an inch or more. Then i go find where the wire entered the mouse and cut at least 1 inch out from the mouse and discard that few inches of cable.
You now have fresh, unbroken wires to work with. Strip back all the wires and reconnect to the wires coming off the connector, making sure to match up the colors and the ground wire. I suggest using a soldering iron and solder them together, but you can twist them together real tight and use electrical tape or heat shrink to insulate the wires and hold the connections together. Put it all back together and go play. If you damaged the feet during the process you can order new ones directly from logitech. It's not too hard of a job. Takes me about 20 minutes to complete. Your other option is to buy a new one.

thnx a lot for the detailed howto.
i'm out of warranty and i will never get a G5 as replacement from logitech. so i have to do it myself. if this all works, i will have a stable + 100% rockstable g5 for the future. if not, that was the last logitech equipment.
sorry but, as u said, there is no take-back or informations and there is also no "official sorry" from logitech.
thnx again 4 the turorial
