M600 touch mouse first impressions.

Recieved my M600 touch mouse this week.  Advertised as iPad like touch motion.   It is - and isn't...

Works as advertised - but could really use some configurable software.  For instance I'd like to be able to give the synthesized mouse wheel motion a tad more inertia.  It is quite smooth (as advertised) but feels sluggish and stops in relatively short distances.  It's like a free wheeling mouse with pancake syrup on it.   'Feels like' it ought to spin further - but doesn't.

You might say that I've been spoiled by my Logitech VX Nano and M515 with their heavy, free spinning wheel motion.  I can flick one of those puppies in a multi-page document and rapidly scoll down many pages - all with an option to interrupt it at any moment with a touch of the finger.    Makes program editing almost fun.  I would love to see the M600 do a better job of synthesizing that free spinning mouse wheel motion.  Maybe something that would allow the user to select from a variety of 'wheel motion profiles' in the configuration screen would be in order!?!?

I was also surprised that the 'mouse button' feature actually involves physical movement of the top of the mouse shell as it descends over the base.  Seems pivoted at the heel end and gives a reassuring 'click' when you press either the left or right side of the shell.  I had mistakenly assumed that it was going to be solely touch sensitive - but perhaps it is better this way as you can still lightly rest your fingers on the mouse without invoking any keypress.   I wonder if the "cube" works similarly?

At any rate the M600 is a perfectly usable mouse.  I had thought it might replace my trusty mechanical wheel mice, but no.  Not yet.  It'll do time riding the bench while awaiting an opportunity to move up.  Either a mechanical wheel mouse failure or perhaps Logitech will breath some renewed vigor and interest in it with a future software update.  I'll hang onto it as a spare.

Re: M600 touch mouse first impressions.

I also received the M600 mouse this week and, in general, like it's functionality. However, I'm left handed and, unfortunately, the mouse doesn't work too well with the button functions swapped. When the button functions are swapped, the "left click function" can be accessed by touching the mouse with one finger only on the right side whereas the "right click function" can be accessed by resting the hand on the mouse and clicking the mouse. This is the reverse of what is desired for a left handed user. In other words, the mouse button functions are not completely swapped. The Logitech technical support (which responded very quickly) said that this is the case also. I'm hoping that a future driver update will address this deficiency. Until then, I guess I'll just use the mouse in its default mode of operation.

I just got this today and I agree that it is a cool mouse.  The smooth scrolling really does work great.  However, I was also under the impression that this was a touch-only mouse and I'm really disappointed to find out it's not.  I'm tempted to take it back.  You see, I tend to group my mice with my thumb and ring finger.  The mechanical joint for this mouse is on the base.  So when I grip the mouse on the sides, I'm holding the same part that I'm trying to "click".  I'm basically pushing against myself and no click it happening.

Right now, I'm trying to get in the habit of not holding it so firmly so it will actually click but I'm a gamer and I don't want to take the chance of not clicking what I need to when I need to.  I'd like to see a future driver update from Logitech which offers the option of one-touch clicking for left and right click similar to a Mac mouse.  That's really why I bought it.  Best Buy has a 30 days return policy, so I'm going to give it 20 days to try to get used to this mouse and if I can't I'll be taking it back and getting something more suitable for gaming.

Optionally, I'd also like to see support for gestures or additional touch buttons.  Both for gaming and the OS.  For example, if I swipe my fingers together, I'd like it to minimize a screen or close it.  If I tap certain other places around the mouse, I'd like it to fire different events that I can bind to actions in the games I play.  That kind of stuff.  There is so much potential in this mouse and Logitech sold us short.

landerTom,

For M600, since it has only one 'big button', it requires SetPoint to swap left/right button to work right.

You can download SetPoint from the M600 support page.

Re: M600 touch mouse first impressions.

Woody,

Yes, I have the Setpoint software and have used it to "swap" the button functions. However, even though the button functions are swapped in principle, the behavior of the mouse is not completely swapped. With the buttons functions swapped, the left click function can then only be accessed by touching the mouse with one finger (on the right side carefully) whereas the right click function is activated by pushing the mouse anywhere (with both fingers or hand on the mouse). In other words, this aspect was not swapped, thus, making the mouse practically unusable in the "swapped" mode.Try it and you'll see what I mean.

Chiming in with Woody (I navigated to this page with a mouse swapped in SetPoint 6.32).

I just swapped the buttons on the M600 unit I have using SetPoint 6.32 to test this. When the buttons are swapped and I applied the change, the behavior on my mouse appeared to flip over quite well: clicking while both fingers are on the mouse resulted in a "left click" function, "right" is only accessed by lifing your off of the body, and the clicking zones, which are offset to give "left click" a larger virtual clicking space on the mouse were properly swapped (left and right click zones on this mouse are slightly offset to give left click a larger and more natural clicking area).

And now I'm changing my mouse back to give my poor brain a break :smileywink: The unit I have at my desk should function just like what's been sold in stores, so I expect if you're using SP 6.32, it should work the same.

CharlesB,

Yes, you're exactly right. I thought I had tried it with the 6.32 software but apparently, I was using an earlier version of 6.3 the last time I swapped the buttons. Thanks for your help.

Re: M600 touch mouse first impressions.

Well I just took my M600 back to bestbuy.  I couldn't stand that the button "clicks" on the base and it was making it impossible to play games with it.  I was under the impression when I bought it that the "click" was "touch" when it's not.  The only thing that is "touch" is the scrolling.  I wouldn't recommend this mouse to anybody.  Definitely over-hyped by Logitech.  Right idea, wrong implementation.

Back to the drawing board Logitech.

Re: M600 touch mouse first impressions.

I guess we all have different preferences. I prefer the "click" style mouse and would not want a purely touch-type mouse with no tactile feedback. Although I had some issues with the earlier version of SetPoint, I would highly recommend the mouse now.

Re: M600 touch mouse first impressions.

I like this mouse, but, I too was misled. I was told it was a freestanding, non-optical mouse. All you had to do was run your fingers across the mouse, not move the mouse itself...big disappointment! Also, I can't get it to scroll left and right? What's up with that?? Any help??
