I just received a replacement M705 Logitech mouse.  When I move the mouse wheel in one direction, it bounces back in the other direction when I take my finger off the wheel.  At first I thought the issue was a software one.  Then I discovered the real problem. The mouse wheel is lopsided.  So, every time I take my finger off the wheel it rotates backwards or forwards to some arbitrary position.  My old Logitech mouse wheel did not move so freely.  It did not rotate when I took my finger off the wheel.  This really is very annoying.  Depressing the buttom behind the mouse corrects this issue, but I don't like moving the wheel with the click function engaged. The problem is when it is not engaged, the mouse wheel does not remain at rest when a user removes their finger.  It seeks to come to rest at some arbitary point, as if the wheel were lopsided, or not properly balanced.  If you spin a wheel that has heavy side, the wheel will rock back and forth until the heavy side faces directly towards the Earth.  That is what is happening here.  Not every M705 mouse has this problem. 

I just tried resyncing my old M705 Logictech mouse, but I can't seem to get it to work at all.  Now the "unifying" device will not initiate it. 

What is the light for on the top of the mouse?

The light on top of the M705 indicates that the battery is good if green and that the battery is low if red. The light is on for a brief time.  You should now have atleast 2 Unifiying USB receivers , up to 6 devices can connect to one receiver but a device can only connect to one receiver at the same time . You may need to use the Unifying Connection software to pair or unpair http://www.logitech.com/en-us/349/6127?debug=0

Just swapped my old Logitech mouse and keyboard for one with the M705 mouse and I agree 110% it's the flakiest scroll wheel I have ever used.  Love the new keyboard but the mouse is going to make me dump the whole package.  Scroll wheel when not detented will blast thru scrolls even set at 1 line and when it stops it "bounces" just as previous posters stated.  Impossible to deal with.  And often if I lift my hand off the mouse the scroll wheel "drifts" and the stuff on my screen "drifts" along with it. 

And when set detented (the button on the mouse) in Outlook 2010, ONE CLICK of the scroll wheel when set to 1 line scrolls TWENTY FIVE email messages down the screen.  Can't manuveur this at all.

Not a hardware error, not a driver error, not a dirty mouse, just a plain terrible scroll wheel (even having a hard time moving this screen up and down with precision).

I, too, have this problem.  I disabled the software smooth scrolling and the problem persisted.  I found that I either had to physically hold the wheel still or click the detente button to keep the wheel from sending a scrolling signal.  The issue happened in IE, MS Word 2000 and  WordPad. (I am running Win 7 64bit home ed.)

Just got my M705 and unfortunately I've got  the exact same problem with the scrollwheel, when on free mode it just rolls an extra cycle when removing my finger from it, which means you stop at some point but the mouse takes you at another. It's pretty much a physical issue, as some people already explained above, you can literally see the wheel rolling, simple as that. 

Already miss my old vx revolution I mean, what happened to Logitech's product design team, even aesthetically wise the mouse has been significantly degraded. Very sad.

I just got my new mouse, and drifting is certainly bad. I will not return this but likely I will never use free-spin mode. Having my screen drifting up and down cause dizziness on me.

I don't think this is a hardware issue. The wheel is free with minimal resistance. It will drift before it settles. Either Logitech has to design a stop mechanism, or find a software solution for it.

I exchanged my m705 in hopes that just the unit was defective, not the case.

The scroll wheel is way to loose.

1. Bumping to stop spin commonly will send the scroll in the opposite direction.
2. Just tilting the device forward and back, in the event of re-centering a mouse on a mouse pad will screen to scroll.
3. Quickly moving mouse cursor on the screen up and down causes scrolling.

Using the mouse is a constant battle between scrolling you want mouse to do, and scrolling you do not

OK - I downloaded the scrolling app but the mouse is still "auto scrolling". Does what was described as "scrolling while tilted", "continuing to scroll after releasing wheel", "scrolling while typing", etc. The only thing I hate about the product. I can't type effectively because the screen keeps moving!

What's the solution? Return it and get something different?
