I have the same issue with my M705. It is brand new and occurs in all programs.
The wheel is not balanced. I can actually see the wheel spin when I remove my finger from it when the heavy side of the wheel is up.

I'm having the same problem with a brand new M705 bought in Spain and the wheel auto bouncing back a bit at times (clearly it's a hardware issue as the wheel is not balanced and it actually moves back, so no software can fix it).
It seems some units are faulty, as I have more M705s that work flawlessly (including the one in the keyboard+mouse MK710 set). In fact it's my first faulty product from Logitech since the original Trackman.
I'm returning it, but I don't know which one to buy next. Actually this was my favorite from Logitech, free-scroll wheel, great battery life and many buttons.
Cheers!

Just behind the wheel is an on/off button for the scroll function. Press it once and you should be all set.

I too have this problem. I got a brand-new M705 as a gift, sent to my home in India from a friend in the USA.
It was to replace a Performance Mouse MX which suffered from a left-click problem of automatically double-clicking.
Now this problem with the M705's scrilling is driving me absolutely batty. The Performance MX never had such scrolling issues, and the smooth-scrolling wheel was the reason I chose the M705 as a replacement.
This issue has made me very unhappy, and I will have to consider long and hard before I spend money on another Logitech product,

I have the same problem. The mouse is designed to freewheel (unless you push in the button above the wheel) so you have to stop it yourself.
The problem is a mechanical one - the wheel is not balanced. You can see it if you move the wheel slightly, you can actually watch it roll back or forward. Gravity is pulling the heavier side of the wheel down.

Hi,
I just bought a G500 mouse and have the exact same problem as the one described in this M705-centric thread.
After years of successful practice of the freewheel (mainly using the great MX Revolution model), I am extremely disappointed to see that Logitech seem to have "downgraded" the feature to make it just ***unusable*** on the G500!!!
I will get in touch with Logitech Support in order for them to find a solution to this issue.
Regards, Pascal.

I have the same problem. I replaced my previous M705 because the button on my previous mouse wore out in just over a year. Both the old mouse and my new mouse had the same problem with the scroll wheel. What's additionally frustrating is that just moving the mouse is enough to make it do the same thing: scroll in the opposite direction that it last scrolled in.
I looked through the software and there is unfortunately no way to disable the scroll wheel. This is very frustrating. At least turning off the free scrolling makes the problem go away.
I like the form of the mouse and love how long the batteries lasts (I moved my original batteries from my old mouse to the new...still on the original batteries after a year and the software estimates there are still 821 days of use left.) However, the scroll wheel problem and button wearing out may cause me to switch to a different company next time I need a mouse.

For completeness, I bought a second M705 because I thought the first one had broken down (my memory is that it used to work). The second one failed exactly like the first. I installed the latest SetPoint (6.51) and it _seems_ to have fixed the problem. I suspect there may be a hardware problem, but they're now successfully working around it in the driver. Woof.

Hi,
The same problem for my new M705. Strange, that this problem is not mentioned in Logitech troubleshooting. Is this means, that mouse whit this problem is faulty?
Using SetPoint solves nothing, becouse it's a hardware problem. Did somenone get fully working M705 without this problem?

I just bought this mouse today and I have the same problem. Wheel is obviouly not balanced and will scroll on it's own, making scroling completely defective.
I'm going to exchange it next week and see if the replacement has the same issue. If it does, I'm returning it.
Edit: I just exchanged it for a replacement. Same issue. This must be a design defect or terrible quality control.
