NEED TWO SETPOINT VERSIONS BEFORE 6.30

[ Edited ]

The Problem: When SetPoint 6.30 is loaded, it starts two Tray icons instead of one, and also two processes visible in the Task Manager. I'm going to try and load a prior version to see if the problem of two Tray icons and two background processes is resolved. I need the two SetPoint versions prior to 6.30.

Making a *very* long story short, Logitech has completely fumbled support of software for its Marathon mouse M705. The mouse is coupled with a Logitech illuminated keyboard, which should make zero difference.

M/N (Model number): M705
PID or S/N: LZ114A6
P/N (Part number): 810-001700
Operating System: Windows XP Media Center Ed
Logitech Software: Setpoint
Software Version: 6.30.4

What do you see in the "Startup" tab when you launch (Winkey+R) msconfig?

If there is some duplication in there, uncheck one of them.

Too many software writers insist on plonking stuff in there that end users do not want running every time they boot into Windows.

Re: NEED TWO SETPOINT VERSIONS BEFORE 6.30

Said to say by on my MK710 kit, the Marathon 705 mouse is working fine.  I have only one Setpoint 6.30 icon.

One thing to check is to ensure you only have ONE (1) Unifying Receiver connected to the PC.

Thanks, MichaelKenward. Nice idea, and I'd already noticed the second process in a fashion similar to that you'd suggested.

Thanks for the idea, smlunatick. I hadn't thought of that, but with mixing and matching two different Logitech mice and two different keyboards, two different dis-Unifying receivers were attached at different time. I'd suspect that *might* have been part of the problem, but the extra Tray icon is gone now. Please see below if you like.

As of this writing, Logitech finds itself incapable of responding appropriately to a case that's a month old. The two software versions I requested haven't been provided either through this forum OR their alledged support channel. Logitech's e-mail support tech didn't know what the Windows Tray was, and even asked me to do my own Registry hacks. Never has a reputable company asked me to do this, and they don't know my level of experience.

After LONG experience with many manufacturers and vendors, Logitech is now showing itself to be a DIY software firm.  That's a *very* bad idea. I own three Logitech keyboards, three Logitech mice, and I've noticed their support has been flushed into the sewers. I've 15 years experience running a mixed-box LAN, and experience with hundreds of large and small scale vendors, publishers and manufacturers.

On the short term for you users whom Logitech has abandoned, I solved the twin Tray icons myself. This doesn't mean the case is closed, unless Logitech can pull its act together and give me the software which was reasonably requested. I solved the tray icons by: 1.) uninstalling all Logitech software through the Add/Remove Programs dialogue, 2.) checked my PC with Revo Uninstaller to make sure it thought everything was out, 3.) performed a cursory RegEdit search and nuked any suspicious keys by hand. This should have been completely unnecessary because every good software maker provides a utility to delete all their stuff, but Logitech doesn't have one, 4.) installed an early version of SetPoint which didn't support the M705 mouse, but did support a keyboard, 5.) From that installed software, I used it's own upgrade link and installed the latest version of SetPoint.

For me, Logitech has failed to serve my simple support needs, and lost significant credibility. I'd urge better companies to challenge their market with better products, because it's clear that Logitech is failing its promise of support for its expensive devices.

Hello BluePlanetMan ,

I'm sorry it was not clear what you were requesting . setpoint620_x64.exe  or X32 setpoint620.exe  Is this the version that you want ?

Aren't they all? Can you name one software/hardware company that provides instant support of the sort that you have requested?

Your complaint is well and truly justified, but if a company provided detailed trouble shooting for every customer with problems, you would have to pay a heck of a lot more for your hardware and software.

That's why the good ones set up self support places like this.

My experience is that Logitech actually does better than most at responding to individual queries. Ever tried getting support from Microsoft?

Thank you Cintech for the reply. I suppose there could be different ways to write, "...I'm going to try and load a prior version to see if the problem of two Tray icons and two background processes is resolved. I need the two SetPoint versions prior to 6.30," but I don't see how that's unclear. As of this writing, the one version you provided is half of what was requested.

Thanks, MichaelKenward:

After 18 years doing this, I can name many. And to me, comparing Logitech to Microsoft isn't worthwhile.
