Mice and Pointing Devices

I have a new V470 that I'm trying to connect to a Thinkpad X301.  I turn it on, press the connect button, the Bluetooth Connection assistant says mouse detected, wait while mouse is set up.  Nothing happens for a couple of minutes, then it starts over again.  Mouse never works.  I also notice no laser light coming from the bottom of the mouse.

Does this sound like a defective mouse or am I doing something wrong.  I've looked through the FAQs but don't see anything to help.

Any guidance will be greatly appreciated.
