Mice and Pointing Devices

#1: When my computer is sitting idle, with the screen saver running, the pointer will randomly create a selection box on the desktop as if someone clicked and was holding the left mouse button, even though the mouse had not been touched and the computer was sitting idle. After I wiggle the mouse and click the left mouse button to get rid of the selection box, the screen saver will no longer go on. I have tried changing the power scheme, changing the length of time before the screen saver comes on, disabling the screen saver and re-enabling it. Nothing works except restarting the computer. Needless to say this is pretty annoying so I usually end up just turning both of my monitors off.

#2: Whenever the above issue occurs, the mouse ceases to function properly thereafter. This decreased functionality is most apparent using a web browser. Every time I navigate to a new website, the cursor is unable to select any hyperlinks. The cursor does not change to the hand icon when you scroll over a link or allow me to click on the link, it remains the default arrow pointer. The same thing occurs with text boxes also, not allowing me to click inside the box and get a cursor so I can type anything. In order to be able to click on any links, I have to minimize the browser and then remaximize it. I have to do this every time I navigate to a new website until I restart the computer. Again, this gets old really quickly. Also, I cannot select anything from drop down menus with the mouse, even after minimizing the browser window. I can open the drop down menu and see the choices, but I cannot click on any of them. 

I have the latest version of setpoint installed but nothing seems to be able to fix the problem except restarting the computer. Unplugging the mouse receiver and plugging it back in, turning the mouse off and back on, closing and reopening setpoint, logging off my user account and logging back in, absolutely nothing works except restarting the computer.

Please, can anyone help me?
