I've had that happen on my 700 a couple of times. I think there might be a problem with the batteries not making a real good connection. I have fixed the problem on my 700 by hitting the bottom end of the remote against my hand a couple of times. If that doesn't work, remove the batteries and clean the battery ends and the connections inside the remote.

I performed the previous suggestion. It made no difference. I have put NiCad, NimH's, and Eneloop's into the device in an attempt to charge them. I get exactly the same message. I truly suspect that there is a problem with the device.
This is not the kind of support I expect for a device of this type.
