Internal Squeezebox server ?

Hello all,

I was reading the documentation about playing music from an SD card directly on the Touch. Then you can activate the internal Squeezebox Server that crawls the sd-card.

I was wondering:

1) When I turn on my laptop, can I browse to that internal squeezebox server on the Touch and operate it through it? Or do I need a Server installed on my laptop for that.

2) Can I additionaly install the server on my laptop and still play the files that are on the SD-card ?

3) Is it possible to add music to the SD card via my laptop, so that the SD card is in fact a network-attached-storage.

I don't want to have my music on 2 places, and I don't want to have my laptop on all the time neither, that's why I was wondering if I could work with an SD-card.

Please help me out...

Herman

the "tinyLMS" on the TOUCH does not have webGUI capability. So the short answer is no.  However, you could install SqueezePlay on your laptop, and then within SP, choose the TOUCH under "choose player" and you'll be able to control the TOUCH from SP running on your laptop.  You can also control the touch with an app on your smart phone or ipad. Install SP from here:

http://downloads.slimdevices.com/nightly/?ver=7.7

there is a way to copy files across your network directly to the card or attached USB drive inside the TOUCH. I think you have to enable this on the TOUCH, but I'm not sure of the exact process as I don't use tinyLMS. Hopefully, someone can chime in with those instructions.

Re: Internal Squeezebox server ?

Just one last question: is it possible to activate the tinyLMS on the TOUCH and specify that the music library is on a network-folder or a nas ? (It's impossible to install LMS on my iomega nas, and the touch doesn't support dnla i've read)

Kind regards,

Herman

Re: Internal Squeezebox server ?

if you have linux hacking skills, maybe. Why not add a small headless server that can run LMS 24/7 and read files off your NAS? You can get something that will work for less than $100 (sheevaplug, etc.). Check out this thread and link regarding cheap/simple servers for running LMS.  TinyLMS is really only minimumlly acceptabe as compared to full LMS.

p.s. the latest versions of LMS do have a DLNA plugin and capability. Sort of hit and miss in terms of what it will work with. And it is for feeding things OTHER THAN squeezebox players, so wouldn't really help you. And DLNA/UPnP is a much inferior method for streaming music (gapless? synching? playlists, etc).  Some vendors have some work arounds, but LMS (as clunky as it is) is light years ahead of DLNA approach.

Re: Internal Squeezebox server ?

Indeed, A SheevaPlug seems to be the ideal option for me, but I am an absolute linux-nobody. I've read the installation guide, and it's way too complex for me.

If I'd found someone in Belgium that would install the whole Sheevathing at my place, THAT would be the solution for me :-))
