For some time I had a perfectly stable installation of LMS. Today I go to open the control panel, and there is a block of red text at the top telling my I don't have privileges to install start/stop the service, and that I need to run as an administrator? What on earth has happened? I didn't do anything with my PC at all.

If you are running Win7 you can try this to set any application to always run with Admin priveledges:

I also have this issue on a PC that I just rebuilt this weekend.  LMS always worked fine on this machine before but I am getting the "You don't have privileges to install or start/stop the Logitech Media Server background service.  Please start the control panel from the Windows Start Menu, via the right click context menu, and click "Run as Administrator".  Fair enough but that is kind of a pain in the neck and given that two people are reporting the issue on the same day, I suspect that it is actually and LMS issue.  If I was to follow your suggestioin and set something to always run under administrative privileges, what is the name of the exe for control panel and where is it stored?

In addition, I can't access the Extension Downloader on the Advanced tab of the Web Control interface now.  It is listed as an Active plugin on the Plugins tab but it doesn't show up on the drop down on the Advanced tab.  Are these issues related?  If not, how do I get ED to show up?

I don't have the issue nor do I use Win7.  It may be that if you set SqueezeBox.exe as described it might also include Control Panel as a sub set of SqueezeBox.exe.  But just a guess.

Another option may be to set your normal user that runs LMS to Administrator.

Thanks for the reply.  I can't find a file named SqueezeBox.exe.  Where is that stored?  I did find squeezeboxcp.exe and setting that to "Run as Administrator" seems to resolve the issue (albiet with the introduction of an extra step to verify that I want to run the file).  I installed LMS on another Windows PC today (this one running Windows 8 Consumer Preview) and it has the same issue.  This never happened in earlier versions running on either of those OSes so it seems more likely that something changed in LMS to introduce the issue than something in either OS to me.

Anyway, changing squeezeboxcp.exe to "Run as Administrator" has no effect on the Extensions Downloader issue.  I've cofirmed that is actually happening on two different PCs also.  Does anyone know what I might do about that?

I had the same thing happen to me.  I uninstalled and re-installed but that didn't fix it.  I right-clicked and ran as adminstrator and that didn't fix it.  I rebooted and now my server won't come up at all. 

I work for Microsoft and used to on the OS and this is beyond me to resolve.  I'd appreciate some help from a Logitech person on this one.

I've got the same problem. Upgraded a while back to 7.2.2 and everything was running fine until today when I got the Administrator Privileges notification. I've uninstalled and reinstalled LMS without any success. Am able to open up the server but right clicking to open as administrator doesn't change the red error message. I can't scan my library...has anyone had any luck with dropping back to an earlier version? Hey, if the MS guy can't figure it out we do need Logitech to solve this.

I finally fixed it after reading lots of other posts with similar titles.  I un-installed everything (including preferences) and then I deleted the directory that the installer leaves behind during the un-install.  I re-booted, re-installed, re-set all of my preferences, let it re-scan my whole huge library for hours and then it started working again.

This is not consumer quality software and even rocket scientists have trouble with it.

I had the same problem.  Thank you for posting the link to make any program run as administrator.  That fixed it for me.  Here are the steps from that link:

To mark an application to always run as an administrator, do the following: 
1. On the Start menu, locate the program that you want to always run as an administrator. 
2. Right-click the application’s shortcut, and then click Properties. 
3. In the Properties dialog box, click the Compatibility tab. 
4. Do one of the following: 

• To apply the setting to the currently logged-on user, select the Run This Program As An Administrator check box, and then click OK.
• To apply the setting to all users on the computer and regardless of which shortcut is used to start the application, click Change Setting For All Users to display the Properties dialog box for the application’s .exe file, select the Run This Program As An Administrator check box, and then click OK twice.
