be sure to do your homework. For example, you can get some high end Linn network streamers, but they have a very clunky upnp interface. Standard DLNA/upnp stuff doesn't do gapless, can't have synched players, etc. There are some work arounds but nothing as elegant as SqueezeBox. So there is some nice stuff out there, but I haven't found anything that does all that SB does (at ANY price). Sonos comes the nearest, but even there I have issues because it won't handle libraries greater than about 65,000 tracks (and even much less depending on the types/extent of your tag metadata). And there are a lot of custom things I use that simply aren't available with Sonos or some other systems.

And I'm thinking that folks do have the WD mybook working to run SbS/LMS. See this thread:

Care to share some of the NAS units you've found / heard to be powerful enough? I've been running a Duo for quite a while which has been stable and speedy enough for selecting albums or artists to play, but is choking on large playlists of my favorite individual tracks.

Hi,
Until 4 months go, I had successfully run a classic squeezebox with LMS on my ReadyNAS Duo for over 3 years. Yes, it's not a server, but it worked very well for my music. Very well. Very, very well.
But after purchasing a new Radio in October, I had to update my LMS to 7.7.1 to support the radio, and that was the end of my music as I knew it.
After the LMS update, my scans would only cover 50% of my files before crapping out. I have reported a bug, which has still not been assigned by Logitech; I have been on several forums; I have read many, many similar problems from ReadyNAS users; I have read many, many suggestions for fixes; I have installed/uninstalled virtually every release dating back 3 years, and nothing, absolutely nothing has worked; I have spent well over 100 hours trying to resolve this. Thanks to software changes by Logitech, I can not access half my music.
Nothing, absolutely nothing, changed on my end. The only change was the LMS update.
I need someone from Logitech to either:
1: tell me that I'm not crazy, that the company screwed up, that somehow ReadyNAS users were left holding the bag, that I should give up my efforts with the Duo because nobody is trying to fix this problem because we are a small minority of users;
or
2: tell me with near complete confidence how to fix my problem.
Will an official, certified, salaried, Logitech employee please come clean on this?

Something in the 7.7.x LMS software had a problem with readynas units (maybe only the sparc units like the duo). There was a lot of discussion over at http://forums.slimdevices.com/. Something to do with renaming shares, etc. See for example:
http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=22&t
Turns out that netgear had to put out a new firmware for the duo to solve the issue (it was beta, but may now be final....check the readynas forums). And my understanding is that some of the issues were fixed with LMS 7.7.2 beta. You can install this from here:
http://downloads.slimdevices.com/nightly/?ver=7.7

Ready NAS Ultra Vs VortexBox
I’m a very happy user of a Squeezebox Duet system playing music on my desktop PC (stored on a WD external drive) through my Bose hifi. Like many who have posted here I want to replace the PC with a NAS drive plugged directly into my modem/router.
The posts on this and other forums have been very helpful - and for that thanks to everyone who takes the time to provide answers. BUT the answers so far have raised several other questions that I don’t think have been asked already so I would appreciate any advice/experience anyone can offer.
1. How does the Netgear ReadyNAS Ultra stack up against the Duo – would this more powerful model run fast enough for the Squeezebox?
2. How does the Ultra stack up against a VortexBox?
3. Will a Logitech Radio work with this setup as I’d like to get one to provide a portable music source (accessing my music files and internet radio) and for other rooms?
4. For the ReadyNAS Ultra - what is the best way to transfer my music; straightforward drag n drop or conversion to FLAC? Can this be done in bulk?
5. For the VortexBox - is there a way to move my existing music files (approx 15,000, mostly WMA Lossless with some MP3) onto the VB unit automatically? If this is possible is it ideal - will this obtain equivalent quality or should I load every CD onto the VortexBox?
I would appreciate any advice/experience anyone can offer.

Ultra much more powerful than Duo, and a better choice for server of LMS
2. How does the Ultra stack up against a VortexBox?
about the same. VB is a bit more user configurable, but there are user groups for the readynas as well.
3. Will a Logitech Radio work with this setup as I’d like to get one to provide a portable music source (accessing my music files and internet radio) and for other rooms?
yes...no matter what you use as LMS server, radio will work.
4. For the ReadyNAS Ultra - what is the best way to transfer my music; straightforward drag n drop or conversion to FLAC? Can this be done in bulk?
clarify. have you ripped your CDs already? If so, I'd do mass conversion (if they are lossless) to FLAC to use on LMS. Foobar2000 or dbpoweramp can do this in batch mode.
5. For the VortexBox - is there a way to move my existing music files (approx 15,000, mostly WMA Lossless with some MP3) onto the VB unit automatically? If this is possible is it ideal - will this obtain equivalent quality or should I load every CD onto the VortexBox?
yes, you'll be able to move your existing files to eitehr VBA or readynas. Since they are lossless, I'd convert to FLAC, then move to whatever you end up with (vba or readynas).
I would appreciate any advice/experience anyone can offer.

Trevor, I am new to this forum. I just wasted 3 weeks of my life that I can never get back trying to get ver 7.7.2 to work on a new WD MyBook NAS. Nowhere is it written that Logitec only "officially Supports" only Netgear ReadyNAS. The old system I had was on a 1TB WD w/RAID. there were a couple of times I had problems but tech support helped me every time with a short phone call. Now I have a $171 store credit with Best Buy and they dont sell Netgear ReadyNAS. Buy.com does but its $201 for the server cage and $94 for a 1 TB hard drive. My intention was to get a larger system to hold a larger collection. I took back my WD MyBook this afternoon. 3 weeks have gone by and I am out of my mind. Can you help me? the $171 may just be sent on a hard drive but I dont know what HD is "officially supported". Another thing, why didnt anyone forsee this and put it in writing somewhere that a novice such as myself would see it?
