Re: NAS Drives and Squeezebox Server

The download section for Logitech Media Server is hosted on www.MySqueezeBox.com, go to My Media and the list of  Supported NAS Devices is right there.  Another NAS to consider is Synology which has it's own supported LMS version and forums for such use.

Re: NAS Drives and Squeezebox Server

Following on from my post below and the very helpful advice I have a supplementary question re fie conversion.

Is there a difference in terms of quality between:

  • FLAC files converted from WMA Lossless files in, say Foobar2000;

     and

  • FLAC files ripped directly from a CD, using for example, a VortexBox appliance or EAC on my PC?

While most of my music is ripped as WMA Lossless I do have a small number of tracks as MP3 - and advice on achieving the best outcome with theses on a NAS drive.

lossless is lossless, so you can use foobar2000 or any other program that will convert from WMA lossless to FLAC. This is identical to reripping to FLAC (but a lot easier!!!). Regarding mp3, just leave these as mp3. But note that when you copy over to the vortexbox, put these in a subdirectory WITHIN THE FLAC SUBDIRECTORY (I have a directory called mp3ONLY that I put within the FLAC subdirectory.   The mp3 directory you see in Vortexbox is for the mp3 mirror that you might choose to create for use with your portables, etc., NOT for the mp3 files you want the Vortexbox player to see (and play).

Re: NAS Drives and Squeezebox Server

of course this assumes that the WMA lossless files were truly accurate, secure rips. I'm not sure what you ripped them with, and how secure a ripper that was. I use dbPoweramp to do my ripping (because of the accuraterip function).  EAC has this too....

Re: NAS Drives and Squeezebox Server

Can i listen to a favoutite radio channel, listed in mysqueezebox.com, without starting my NAS everytime? handy when i only want to listen to the radio for 15 minutes. How do i do that? At the moment my NAS is strated as soon as i want to listen to the radio.

2nd.

I start up my SB radio and listen to a radio channel, which is on my "favourites" on mysqueezebox.com. When i swith to my local mp3 library, no sound is heard until i shut down and restart the SB radio.  You see on the display, the song is being played, but you can't hear a thing.

Re: NAS Drives and Squeezebox Server

No, as soon as you wake your Radio it communicates with the last server it was connected too, in your case your NAS.  But it's not that big of a deal as the NAS will go back to sleep in a few minutes anyway.  I'd suggest you move "switch to MySB.com" to your Home menu so you can easily switch to it.

Radio > Settings > Advanced > Network > "switch to MySB.com" (press + button then select "add to Home menu"

Another option is to use this "switch to MySB.com" before you turn off the Radio, then it will not wake your NAS when you wake up the Radio next.

Re: NAS Drives and Squeezebox Server

well - i shutt down the NAS every night 23:00h, so i would be great if he stays off - also if i listen to the radio in the morning unti 16:00h.

But i gues i would be better to let the nas on all the time and let him "sleep" during night-time (and a great part of the day). We only use the nas between 16-23h

Re: NAS Drives and Squeezebox Server

I've always used Windows Media Player to rip CDs (to WMA Lossless) so is this likely to have provided good copies?

I've had my eyes opened to other CD rippers and file formats since I starte reading this forum so, bottom line is, if the answer is no or unlikely then I will reload everything from scratch because I want to establish the best copies in FLAC format.

Again, really appreciate the advice I get on here.

For 99% of the disks, it doesn't matter what program you used to rip. The extra security/accuracy of EAC, dbpoweramp, etc. only matters for that 1% that had some sort of error. (And by the way, a brand new first time disk with no visible scratch can also have an error).  I've not used WMP to rip, but for example, itunes basic ripping doesn't tell the user that there was an error in a disk rip--it just tries to work around it.

You're probably fine, but there is no way of knowing because I assume WMP didn't give you any sort of logs or notice that perhaps there was an error in a rip.  (and keep in mind that such error may not even be something one can hear on playback).  How many disks are we talking about? 100, 5000.  The number would probably drive my decision.  But no matter what, you might start with just converting your WMA lossless to flac in a batch manner (foobar2000 or dbpa can do this).  You can alway rerip all or certain disks later if concerned.

Re: NAS Drives and Squeezebox Server

Hello,

I've just bought a Squeezebook Touch and a ReadyNas nv+ v2... and I'm starting to get a sick feeling. The installation instructions for squeezebox media center bear little resemblance to what one sees on the v2 device, so I presume I fall into the "we wask our hands of you" category of owners of unsupported devices... having naively thought that Logitech would follow the upgrade of Netgear to the V2.

Given that the reason I bought this combination of equipment was because of the explicit references to ReadyNAS and the ability to use it as a media streamer, claims that NAS is "Not A Server" is frankly offensive.

I hope I'm wrong...
